P'l N' E K N O' L L S PT'O R A d¥/t£H4 Girls Talk at Women’s Club By Veronica Stanley President Bonnie Ferneau welcomed members of the Pine Knoll Shores Womens Club to its February 24 meeting at town hall. It began at 9:30 a.m. with a social and refreshments provided by Barbara Bagby, Pauly Brown and Kay Howe on a table decorated with a centerpiece complementing the red theme and made by Marsha Deane. Membership Chair Linda Pearson presented Mary Dee Balara as a new member. Corresponding Secretary Marian Kutzer sent one sympathy card and three get-well cards to members and announced February birthdays. Gail Halada and Loretta Poremba presented Scholarship raffle awards donated by Barbara Bagby (Tea Set), Sue Warren (Fruit Basket) and Kay Howe (Ring Holder). A Memorial collection was held in honor of deceased member Newell Haller. Dot Miller reported that the Beach Book Club is reading Moloko’I, by Alan Brennert, the history of a leper colony, focusing not on the disease but on the hu man tragedy of patients and families ostracized because of the disease. Between the Bookends’ latest reading is Let’s Take the Long Way Home, by Gail Caldwell, where best friends share their history of a struggle with alcohol, their relationships with men and colleagues, their love of books, their hikes, their rowing and their dogs, who brought them together in the first place. Lit Wits is reading Paula McLains The Paris Wife, about Ernest Hemingway’s first wife and his life before fame changed him. Ilene Karlsson was appointed to the Town Hall Kitchen Refurbishing Committee and Arlene Graczewski to the meeting of the Helping Neighbors. Arlene said there would be a luncheon on May 10 for elders at St. Francis by the Sea Church. She also passed a sign-up sheet for volunteers to assist with transportation, set-up and clean-up and asked for names of people to invite. The committee hopes to identify what older people in our community need and want. Mary Kanyha said three of our club members have art on exhibit at Art for the Heart. The artists are Marsha Deane, Floranne Passino and Kathy. Foy. Vice-President Barbara Milhaven introduced guest speaker Dr. Jennifer Orr, speaking on “Womens Health Issues and Solutions.” Dr. Orr s office, Girl Talk and Gynecology, is located at East Coast Square South on Arendell Street. She discussed the special relationship she has with her patients. She provides a relaxed, profes sional visit where patients can talk about fears, anxieties and emotions associated with medical care. In addition to personal medical conditions, there is also help for concerns such as care giving that becomes so important in spousal or parental care. Jennifer encouraged women to have a positive caring experience in health care. Pauly Brown’s Report on Famous Women featured Lady Godiva, an Anglo-Saxon gentlewoman, patron of the arts, equestrienne and tax protester. Her husband, Leofric, Earl of Mercia, taxed everything he could. Their argument over taxes was a classic war of wills. He used her love of the arts to let her win her war against his taxes. Focusing on the glorious beauty of a perfect human body, she agreed to his request to ride her horse unclothed through the marketplace. All survived the event with peace and dignity, and the taxes were removed. The Supper Club will enjoy a pasta dinner on April 15. Contact Pat Ruggerio or Edy Rene Magel. Cook’s Night Out is April 27.
