Kayak for Warriors (continued from page i) like watching a balloon race on the water. It was really wonderful to see. The first kayaker across the finish line was Ray Moore with a time of 32:32. The second-place finisher was a wounded warrior with a time of 37:01. When the race was held five years ago, there were a total of eight kayakers. On Saturday, we counted 126 reg istrants! It is amazing how this event has grown in a few short years. We had people from all over the area. North Carohna, and even a few from out of state. It sure looked like everyone was having a good time. The race results can be found at www.kayakforthewarriors.org. As the participants paddled their way back to the park, the hot dogs were grilling and the raffle for cer tificates from local restaurants was being held. Kayakers enjoyed a lunch, music and the camaraderie of old and new friends. ' Later that evening, a post-race reception was held at Beacon’s Reach Marina. Peggy Rochon arrived in the Hope for the Warriors’ van with a group of wounded warriors, and a large contin gent of locals were there for an enjoyable ending to a great weekend. Earher in April, the Tour de Bogue Banks bike ride was held. Thanks to the great efforts of Mike Hargett, Cheryl Smith, John Brodman and Bill Keefe, that event garnered $16,500. Once we get a final number from the kayak activities on the 8*^^ and 9*^, the $16,500 will be added to that figure. We are hoping to surpass last year’s donation to Hope for the Warriors. Kay^ for Warriors Supporters: Thank You! The Parks'and Recreation Committee of Pine Knoll Shores would like to thank the following for all of their support for the Hope for the Warriors events in April and June. It truly was a community effort that brought together wounded warriors, local businesses, artists, restaurants, kayakers, bikers, paddle boarders, volun teers, and the local community.
