Where Did You Spend the 4*?
By Phyllis Makuck
Thousands spent the 4* of July right here‘on Bogue Banks, extending their stay on both sides of the mid-week holiday.
Although we enjoy sparsely populated beaches throughout most of the summer season, seeing a lineup of colorful umbrellas,
blankets and chairs with sunbathers of all shapes and sizes during the week of the 4* puts most of us in a holiday mood. De
spite the rain and high winds that washed out evening events such as the Pig Pickin’ at Beacons Reach on Sunday, July 1, there
was no dampening of the high spirits of crowds that turned out for the rest of the week’s celebrations.
Pine Knoll Shores had an exceptionally large turnout for its 4*^^ of July parade with lots of children decked out in red, white
and blue. Everyone seemed to enjoy the cold watermelon at Garner Park after the parade as well.
Although many residents go to neighboring venues to view fireworks, there’s no need to leave town, especially if you have
access to the beach, the sound or a deck above the tree line. Fireworks are visible east and west of us—though admittedly less
audible. The Country Club of the Crystal Coast, of course, quite possibly one of the best viewing locations, threw a fun-filled
July 4‘^ party, entertaining children as well as adults. If you did not spend the 4’-^ of July here this year, you may want to con
sider doing so next year.

Let’s Talk About
Wind Power:
Part II
By John Brodman
If wind power is the answer, then
just what is the question? Given the
technical limitations, high cost, and
environmental impacts of wind power
discussed in Part I (see June’s edi
tion), why are we even thinking about
wind power? The answer may be in
the evolution of our thinking about
energy policy. Until fairly recently,
our national energy policy has been
primarily concerned with deliver
ing abundant and reliable supplies
of energy at affordable prices. How
ever, within this brOad mandate over
the last 50 years, we have alternatively
and simultaneously been preoccupied
with the problems of scarcity (resource
depletion), conservation, efficiency,
security of supply, energy indepen
dence, oil imports, market pricing,
price volatility, regulation, research and
development, safety, economic growth,
environmental protection and, more
recently, global climate change.
