Photo by Dan Law Town Hall Flower Garden By Phyllis Makuck The Hereth Memorial Garden in front of town hall has been especially beautiful this year thanks to two long-time Garden Club members Lois Jean O’Keefe and Yvette Bannen. “It’s a labor of love, Yvette says. She explains: “When Lee Hereth donated money to the Garden Club in memory of Peg Hereth, a long-time club member, there was a long period of time when there was a lot of indecision about what to do with the funds. When Lee Hereth, grieving for his wife, died a few months later, it was decided that something had to be done tp honor both of them. The area at the bot tom of the stairs had taken on a neglected look, and somebody came up with the idea of a memorial garden. I m convinced that Peg and Lee inspired that idea because it is the sort of thing that fits their personalities. We found out from a former mayor at the dedication of the garden that the Hereths used to quietly and without fanfare donate money to various town causes.” Yvette and Lois Jean live up to the Hereths’ generosity of spirit. They have devoted many hours of their time and an equal degree of physical effort to plan, plant, weed and water. And, on every visit to town hall, we all enjoy the flowers of their labor.
