Heroes on the Water
By Dan kw, Patrick Curley & Hilanne Myers
Over a million injured military veterans v^^ho served in the United States Military are hurting and need our help.
Five years ago, Heroes on the Water (HOW) wras founded w^ith a single purpose: to help w^ounded warriors relax, rehabilitate,
and reintegrate w^ith society through kayak fishing and the outdoors.
Compared to previous wars, injuries far outnumber deaths in the recent war on terror. As a result of modern technology, spe
cifically protective clothing, helmets and the advances of aeromedical evacuations, injured military personnel are surviving and
returning home to the United States with both visible and invisible injuries. A majority of them return physically and emotion
ally devastated, uncertain about their future—and vulnerable for the first time.

a Success!
By Ph)'llis Makuck
Thanks to the efforts of so many who
volunteered, sponsored angels and/
or donated money, the 2012 Project
Christmas Cheer Angel Tree at Shep
herd of the Sea Lutheran Church in At
lantic Beach was a big success. Carteret
County’s Project Christmas Cheer had
873 applications—175 seniors (37 more
than in 2011); 1,097 adults; and 1,405
children (74 more than 2011). Shep
herd of the Sea made angels for 180 of
those children. With approximately 20
volunteers from Shepherd of the Sea,
St. Francis by the Sea and the com
munity at large working approximately
100 hours, all those angels had a merry
Christmas.
