A, Vol. 10, No.l A Shoreline Community, Pine Knoll Shores, N.C. Kayak for the Warriors See pages 14-15 July 2013 Kayak for Warriors a Huge Success By Jean McDanal Despite tropical storm Andrea threatening to dampen the weekend events for Kayak for Warriors, June 7 and 8, our local community was undeterred and came out in full force to support Hope for the Warriors. We are so excited to see this year’s tally. We presented a check for $70,000 to Hope for the Warriors at the reception on Saturday, June 15. Only through much hard work and dedication was the result so outstanding. Over 150 volunteers spent endless hours securing donations for the auction and raffle, getting food donated by local food establishments, getting the word out and actually working from sunrise to sundown. Friday nights reception and live auction was fun! Initially scheduled to be held at town hall, the auction was moved to the fire station because of high winds. Over 260 people registered to bid. Thanks to Howard Henderson and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Auctioneersondeck. com, the bids were flying from one end of the room to the other. Items included beach house weeks, dental care, chiropractic services, fish ing expeditions, golf outings, kayaks and so much more. The total from the auction itself was over $12,000. Much of the delicious food was donated by local establishments. Thanks to Celeste Lindley and her team, including Pat Lewis, Mickey Muns, Maureen Danehy, Elaine Moore, Barbara Baccollo, Donna Belanger, Barbara Gaunt, Mary Anne Hotham, Arlene Terrell, Joy Wray and Bonnie Ferneau for helping with the food presentation and serving. Beverages were taken care of by Mike King, Tom Moeller and Tom King. i6T0AM"''"'RW"'*= The Pine Knoll Shores Radio Station broadcasts 24 hours a day with weather and emergency info. EMERGENCY-CALL 911 ECG 726-1911 • PUBLIC SAFETY 247-2474 (Continued on page 3) Budget for Fiscal-Year 2013-2014 By John Brodman The Board of Commissioners (BOC) unani mously passed the proposed budget for Pine Knoll Shores for the fiscal year 2013- 2014 (which begins July 1, 2013, and ends June 30, 2014) at its regularly scheduled meeting on June 13. This action was the culmination of a process that began in January and involved many special BOC meetings, several presentations of the proposed budget to the citizens of Pine Knoll Shores in open meetings by Mayor Jones, publi cation of the proposed budget for pub lic inspection and review in multiple venues and a public hearing. The new budget maintains the town’s basic (ad valorem) property tax rate at the same level of 15.6 cents per $100 of assessed value that has been in place for several years now. The oceanfront and non-oceanfront beach tax rates remain ' unchanged at 5.2 cents and 1.4 cents per $100 of assessed value, respectively, and there are no changes in the billing rates the town charges for water. Over all, the towns financial status remains solid, arid the new budget is balanced, as required by North Carolina state law.
