2013 Holiday Beach Cleanup
Byjohn Brodman
The post-July 4 holiday beach cleanup in Pine Knoll Shores took place this year on July 8, starting at the Iron Steamer beach
access We had a record turnout of 44; volunteer participants who donned work gloves and carried plastic trash bags to their as
signed sections of the towns beach to ferret out and pick up the litter left over from the Independence Day crowds There were
enough volunteers to cover all sections of the beach and some of the canal-front and soundside marinas and parks as well.
Aluminum cans, plastic bottles, paper food-service containers, wrappers and cigarette butts were common items found,
along with the residue (cardboard tubes and paper wadding) left over from fireworks, broken chairs, pieces of lumber broken
Wtes, towels, occasional articles of clothing and flip-flops. Only three Rolex watches were found by lucky volunteers this vear
(just kidding). ' j i
Special thanks go out to the towns Parks and Recreation Committee; The Shorelines photographers, Dan and Teresa Law; the
NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, which partners with the town each year to sponsor the cleanup; and to the town’s Public
Service Department, which hauled away all the trash collected. TTianks to all for a great effort!
