Pine Knoll Shores commissioners’ meetings By Yvette Bannen Because of a time conflict, former Mayor Derryl Garner of Newport was un able to be present for a proclamation in his honor. It was noted that he has been instrumental in many accomplishments during his tenure not only for New port but for the entire area, serving on many councils and receiving numerous awards. Police Chief Lepore reported that National Night Out activities in August were a huge success and earned the town one of seven awards given out nationally. John Langheld reported on his two-year endeavor to find a suitable location for boat trailer parking within the town, and that he is still looking. Susan Toms reported on her eiforts to encourage more recycling by looking for grants to pay for roll-out carts. Last year, the trial period of collecting trash and recyclables on Mondays was successful and showed an increase in recycling and a reduction in trash. Town Manager Kramer reported on the various ongoing projects within the town. He hopes that by February there will be some news regarding the au tomatic water meter readings. There has been considerable activity with the East-End Stormwater project, including a snag with a CAMA permit, and at the time of the BOC meeting, he was still waiting for the green light from the State Revolving Fund to advertise for bids in order to get the project started. There is $18,000 in the current budget that can be used to do some edging along roads that flood. Those areas will be identified during the next rain event. It is expect ed that making a 4-inch-deep trench by the roadway and filling it with crushed stone will help disperse the water. There will be a crosswalk meeting with DOT later in the week, and Mr. Kramer will be meeting with a Boy Scout coordinator to discuss an Eagle Scout project involving a walking trail in the area adjacent to Pine Knoll Boulevard. Commissioner Edwards suggested that, in light of the recent freezing temper atures and burst pipes, there should be more advertising of the town managers recommendation of shutting off the water to your home at the meter box before departing for a lengthy period. The Strategic Planning Committee was scheduled to work with the commis sioners on a final draft report during the BOC special meetings at the Hampton Inn on January 30-31. (See “Update on the Strategic Planning Process” in this issue of The Shoreline for more information on this committee.) With a few additional amendments, the Board Qualifications Ordinance was approved by the commissioners. The commissioners approved a resolu tion opposing the permitting of the proposed Mill Pond wind energy project in Carteret County. The proposed 40 wind turbines would be 492 feet tall; as comparison, local water towers are 150 feet tall. There was discussion regarding debt restructuring, both for items in the general fund (two loans for the Public Safety Building and t\\fo fire department vehicles) and for the water bond. No decision was made at this time. A resolution opposing the US Army Corps of Engineers’ and National Park Service’s draft of a dredged material management plan and environmental impact statement for the Morehead City harbor project was approved. Their plan is to put the dredged material on Shackleford Banks rather than making it available for use on Bbgue Banks. The next regular Board of Commissioners’ meeting will be held at town hall on February 13 at 6 p.m. TOWN OF 100 Municipal Circfe • Main - 247-4353 • Fax - 2474355 • Mon-Fri 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ELECTED OFFICIALS MAYOR Ken Jones - 247-4353, ext, 17 - Two-year term - elected in 2013 mayorjones@townofpks.com COMMISSIONERS John Brodman - 726-7643 - elected in 2013 - admin@townofpks.com Lany Corsello - 247-0262 - elected in 2013 - admin@townofpks.com Robert Danehy - 240-2945 - (Mayor pro tempore) elected in 2011 - admin@townofpks.com Clark Edwards - 726-7429 - elected in 2011 - admin@townofpks.com Fred Fulcher - 808-2569 - elected in 2013 - admin@townofpks.com TOWN OFFICIALS TOWN MANAGER: Brian Kramer - 247-4353, ext. 16 - manager@townofpks.com TOWN CLERK: Scott Sherrill - 247-4353, ext. 11 - admin@townofpks.com FIN & ADMIN: Julie Anderson - 247-4353, ext. 14 - janderson@townofpks.com PLANNING & INSPECTIONS: Chris Jones - 247-4353, ext. 18 - biceo@townofpks.com PUBLIC SERVICES: Ernie Rudolph - 2474353, ext. 27 - psd@townofpks.com PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING - 314 Salter Path Road - 247-2268; Fax - 247-2897 POLICE: Chief Lorrie Lepore - 247-2474 - liepore@townofpks.com FIRE & EMS: Fire Chief Jason Baker-247-2268-jbaker@townofpks.com Emergency: Call 911 Emergency Communications Center (ECC) - 726-1911; Public Safety - 247-2474 NEWat LOGO: McLaughlin I no ATIflM ..miM^ 5056 Hwy 70, Suite B LUlfATIUN: morehead city DOCTOR: (next to Waffle House) Welcome Dr. Nathan Swacha UnilDO OPEN until 6pm EVERY weekday!
