The next dinner with Mayor Ken Jones will be on April 11 at 5:30 p.m. The location will be announced at a later time. East End Stormwater project. As of this writing, we have solicited bids from contractors to start the project in early February. We hope to have all work on the grounds of the Country Club of the Crystal Coast completed by the end of March, and the complete project done by late April. Phase II sidewalks. Our package has been approved by the NCDOT Division II Environmental Officer. We are awaiting approval from the right of way certifying office and a traffic engineering review. We are expecting to complete construction prior to Memorial Day. Stormwater control work on our streets. The town budgeted a small amount of funds to do some work on the streets of Pine Knoll Shores to avoid ponding of water after rain. One of the ways we are looking at doing this is identifying streets where we think that edging will help with drainage, and we will take a look through town to identify those areas. Changes to our website. Town Clerk Scott Sherrill has made some changes to our website. Please visit townofpks.com and let Scott or me know what you thiiik. Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS). This is a repeat message for a very iitiportant volunteer opportunity here in Pine Knoll Shores. We would like to get some help from some folks who have a few hours a week to answer phones, file paperwork and maybe patrol the town in a marked VIPS car. There will be no guns, no badges and no confrontations (we’ll let our sworn officers do that)—just a radio and an opportunity to help keep our streets and town a bit safer. If you are interested, see “VIPS Seeks Volunteers” in this issue of The Shoreline and contact the police department at 247-2474. PKS radio station—1610 AM. Pine Knoll Shores has a radio station. If you tune in you will hear about events coming up in town, including: • dates and times of Board of Commissioners’ meetings, public hearings and meetings of the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment • dates and times for meetings for the Parks and Recreation Committee and the Community Appearance Commission • deadlines for filing articles in The Shoreline • mosquito spraying schedule • garbage, recycling and yard debris collection schedules • information pertaining to the water system • Public Safety Department messages • Emergency Management messages Remember: if you hear the siren sound in Pine Knoll Shores, immediately tune your radio to 1610 AM for an emergency broadcast. PKS exploring an event to recognize Vietnam era veterans. As many of you will recall, in 2008 the town had an event to honor present and past Pine Knoll Shores residents who served during WWII. In 2010 we did the same for our Korean War veterans. Mayor Jones has asked us to explore having a similar event to honor those who served during the Vietnam era. In late January we had a meeting with a group of volunteers who might organize such an event. Stay tuned. PARC volunteers needed. Pine Knoll Shores has a small staff and does not have a paid recreation department. Everything that you see go on in town, from kayak races which benefit wounded servicemen/women to Turkey Trots on Thanksgiving morning to efforts to clean up our beach after the Fourth of July—all of this takes place because citizen volunteers make it happen. The vehicle to get this done is the all-volunteer Parks and Recreation Committee (PARC). The PARC is experiencing its normal rotation of membership and we need some volunteers. Please consider getting involved. February 2014 I The Shoreline 19
