East End Stormwater Project. The town awarded the construction contract to
Sunland Builders of Newport, and we hope to be installing the lines by press time.
The bids came in below the engineer’s construction estimate, which was a surprise
to all. We expect the project to be completed no later than the end of March. Total
project costs should come in around $320,000. The town has a 20-year zero-interest
loan from the North Carolina Clean Water State Revolving Fund.
Sale of town’s oceanfront lot. The town has decided to sell the oceanfront lot at
117 Knollwood via a sealed bid process. We purchased the lot as part of our pubUc
beach access obligations back in 2010. If you are interested in submitting a bid, you
Can find out more information on the town’s website at www.townofpks.com.
Sidewalks. We will open the bids for the next two sidewalk segments on or about
March 18. We have established a construction completion date of May 9.
PKS crosswalks—signage and safety. As we discussed here in December, we
are concerned with the location and effectiveness of the blinking signs that are on
Highway 58 to support the crosswalks at Mimosa Boulevard and Juniper Road. A
group met to discuss this, and we will talk with NCDOT very soon. There is one
thing I want to point out that is sure to generate some discussion. We are exploring
lowering the speed limit on Highway 58 from 45 mph to 35 mph from Memorial
Day through the second weekend of October. Any decisions on this will be made by
the Board of Commissioners at a monthly meeting, so keep an eye out for agendas
that Town Clerk Scott Sherrill puts out.
Fire alarm and home fire safety inspection. Did you know that the Pine Knoll '
Shores Pubhc Safety Department conducts free home inspections for fire safety? If
you are interested, please call 247-2268.
