K4TW Event (Continued from page 1) Earlier, Josh Race and Dom Boccolo and their crew set up tents, tables and chairs at McNeill Park for general viewing and at Garner Park where most of the festivities were held. Registration opened at 8 a.m. for those who had not previously registered. Sam Scudder was responsible for securing 40 loaner kayaks for folks who needed them. A number of young Marines from Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point helped unload and jockey the kayaks to and from vehicles. Our kayaks came back cleaner than they have been in three years! Elaine Holt and her team staffed the raffle table and sold tickets. Cam Anderson put his chef s apron on and grilled 400 hot dogs to serve lunch to volunteers, participants and others. While all of this was taking place, families were registering for the fun bike ride at McNeill Park—29 riders in all. Trophies were awarded to Jordan Ellerson of Holly Springs and Carson Cicchi of Morehead City as the first ones finished. Following the ride, bikers travelled up to Garner Park for lunch and the kayak awards. Ray Moore won the Mens 22-64 division with a winning time of 33:40. This year s Warrior was James Castellow, son-in-law of Bruce Carbrey. He raised $2,820. The complete list of raw times and warrior times can be found on our website, www.kayakforth- ewarriors.org. The dragon boat designed by Mike Hargett and Bill and Tina Keefe won the fun boat race—or was that the Loch Ness monster? Entertaining us throughout the morning were Pine Knoll Shores residents Pete and Patricia Sauter. Face painting was a highlight for the kids, thanks to Trish Kramer. If you missed the Homes Tour on Thursday, June 5, you missed a real treat. The 12 featured homes were elegant, as well as interest ing and unique. Each reflected the personalities of the owners. Our sincere thanks go to these homeowners and all of the volunteers who helped to “babysit” the homes. We have heard nothing but compH- ments on this first-ever event. The Homes Tour included admission to the auctions and recep tion held at the aquarium on Thursday evening, or tickets were available at the door for a donation of $5. Food, donated by several eateries, and drinks were available. Folks could imbibe and nibble as they perused the silent auction and placed their bids. The live auc tion began at 7:30 p.m. Mayor Jones introduced Jan Frye from the Veterans Administration, who in turn introduced six wounded war riors who are currently enrolled at the VA Acquisition Academy in a three-year program dubbed “Warriors-to-Workforce.” This program is designed to train participants to become government acquisition CONTENTS Public Safety 5 Current Sudoko 5 Fishing and Hunting 6 Dining Out 8 Pine Knoll Shores Commissioners’ Meetings 9 What's Up With PARC? 12 Kramer’s Korner 12 History of Pine Knoll Shores 13 Country Club News 14 Real Estate News .....14 PIKSCO Happenings.... 15 Women’s Club 15 Town Crier 16-17 At the Aquarium 19 Mayor’s Memo 19 Garden Club 23 At the Library 23 PKANews 25 Book Talk 25 Bridging the Gap 27 Current Crossword 30 Previous Crossword Solution 30 Previous Sudoko Solution 30 Events Calendar 31 professionals. About 70 wounded veterans are currently in the pro gram. The standing ovation these warriors received was a testament to the town’s commitment to our patriots. Jan Frye also presented the mayor with a plaque from the VA thanking Pine Knoll Shores for its contributions. Auctioneers on Deck took over the live auction festivities. How ard Henderson and Mary Ellen Eurich did a great job of keeping the auction lively and fun. We had some really terrific items this year, including box seats to two Carolina Panthers games, a stay at a house in the Bahamas, dental work certificates and a gorgeous quilt by Cindy Moeller and Karen Zaenker. Thanks to all of our sponsors for providing food, drink and auction items. When we combine the receipts from all events, we are confident that we can turn over a check to Hope for the Warriors* for $75,000, which is $5,000 more than last year. A special thanks goes to Bud Pitzer who herded all the cats, kept us all in line and once again provided stellar leadership in putting it all together. Thanks, Bud, for your energy, patience, effort and commitment. Please see the Town Crier on pages 16-17 for photos of the events. /'• Special Thanks We regret to announce that Dan Law has decided to step down from his duties as Shoreline photographer after almost four years of volunteer service. In addition to his contributions as a photographer, Dan has written the “Geek Corner” and “Recycling News” columns during his time with the newspaper. He has been willing to sacrifice his family time to attend functions to capture just the right shot, and his decision to get on with the business of being retired will leave a hole in our staff. We wish Dan the very best and thank him for his years of service. —The Editors P/The^^^ • Shoreline 252-247-4353 ext. 19 e-mail: Shoreline@townofpks.com www.townofpks.com EDITOR: Janie Price 240-2365 EDITORS AT LARGE: John Brodman 726-7643 Marilyn Brandt 919-828-4231 Carla Dowler 808-3945 Betty Johnson 247-7389 Sherryl Janosko 910-362-8765 Phyllis Makuck 726-8776 Dennis Tomaso 622-4400 CONTRIBUTING REPORTERS: Yvette Bannen 240-1528 Jacquie Pipkin 622-0340 Charlie McBriarty 726-0602 Jean McDanal Barbara Milhaven 240-0678 Jim Scanlon 726-4174 Richard Seale 726-0478 Dan Law 222-4356 Jim Turner 240-2474 Marian Goetzinger 422-9000 CIRCULATION MANAGER: Scott Sherrill 247-4353 PHOTOGRAPHER: Dan Law 222-4356 ADVERTISING: Marie Lawrence 726-7081 ARTICLE DEADLINE DUE DATE ISSUE Mon., July 14 Aug.
