Citizen Academy Begins September 9 By Scott Sherrill This fall Pine Knoll Shores residents are invited to learn about our Jocal government. This Citizen Academy will meet weekly on Tuesdays for about an hour at 8:30 a.m. from September 9 through November 4 at town hall. Light refreshments will be provided. Although no preregistration is required, participants who attend all nine sessions will be recognized at the November 12 Board of Commissioners’ meeting. Attendees will have the chance to hear from elected officials, town staff and volunteer leaders, and by the end of the program should have a good understanding of the functions and workings of our town government and some insight into other municipal governments. Topics on the nine-week agenda are: — Introductory Meeting (Strategic Plan and Background) — Disaster Planning and Preparation — Town History — Public Services and Water — Planning and Inspections — Finance and Budget — Public Safety — Parks and Recreation and The Shoreline — Wrap-Up Our program is designed to be flexible to cater to attendees who want a broad picture of our towns government or are interested in a specific area. The full schedule will be posted on the town’s website calendar, published via the town manager’s email list and published in the September Shoreline so that participants can plan out the meetings they would like to attend. This initiative stems from the Board of Commissioners’ 2014 Annual Agenda item “Government Accessibility” and supports the town’s Strategic Planning Objective of maintaining small-town character through accessibility to town government. Please contact me with any questions at admin@townofpks.com or 247-4353, ext. 11. Remember... Cardboard is recyclable and should not be placed in the trash. Break boxes down flat and stack them next to or inside your recycle bin, or you may take them directly to the special cardboard bin behind town haU or in Lot C by the fire department. Important fact: Because it’s heavy, we pay extra when cardboard ends up in the trash; when it’s in the recycle bin, there’s no extra fee. 3road Street Clinic to Host Fundraiser The Board of Directors of the Broad Street Clinic announces “An Evening for the Broad Street Clinic” on Saturday, September 13, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center.
