Pumpkin Card Party By Maty Anne Hotham BHA Membership Meeting and Volunteer Picnic The 13th annual Pumpkin Card Party will be held on October 28, from 1-5 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City. This event is sponsored by Carteret General Hospital Auxiliary volunteers—a dedicated group of individ uals ranging in age from 15 to 85 who help in 26 different areas of the hospital. In addition to providing volunteer support, the auxiliary also raises money for the Hospital Foundation. Construction is well underway for the new Specialty Pavilion, which is an integral part of CGH s ability to more efficiently and effectively meet the health care needs of our community. Enhancements include the new cancer center, improved womens services, progressive care and critical care areas, as well as enhanced surgical care. Participants at the card party are welcome to play bridge, canasta, dominoes or any card/board game of their choice. Tickets at $15 each include refresh ments, snacks, delicious homemade desserts, 50-50 raffle and fantastic door prizes. Please join us for an afternoon of fun and games. To reserve a table, contact Jane Garner at 223-4141. The Beaufort Historical Association (BHA) will hold its semi-annual member ship meeting and volunteer picnic on Tuesday, September 23, at 5:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner Street in Beaufort. The brief meeting and subsequent picnic will acknowledge and thank all of the members and volunteers who dedicate countless hours to the BHA and our mission. Without the support of the community and individual volunteers, the BHA and the Beaufort Historic Site could not present the heritage of the town of Beaufort and Carteret County to visitors and locals in such an entertaining and informative manner. This joint meeting and picnic will recognize current BHA members and volun teers, as well as welcome those who may be interested in participating or donat ing volunteer time in the future. The picnic, catered by Rolands Barbecue of Beaufort, is open to current and potential volunteers, members of the BHA and anyone who wants to come out and show support. RSVPs are required to provide an accurate count for the picnic. For more information or to RSVP, please contact the Beaufort Historic Site at 728- 5225, stop by the sites visitors center or visit online at www.beauforthistoricsite.org. I hope you are all having a great summer. Here are a few of the things going on in Pine Knoll Shores. Next dinner with the mayor. The next dinner with Mayor Ken Jones will be on Friday, October 10, at 5:30 p.m. The location is yet to be determined. Phase II sidewalks. By the time you are reading this we will have completed the two sidewalk segments of this project. We obviously did not get this completed by Memorial Day, but we have hopefully helped address a major safety concern in the future for crossing Salter Path Road in this area. Many of you have asked about the plans for vegetation on the segment near the Hampton Inn. The management there has asked if they may plant vegetation there. Sidewalk questionnaire. The Board of Commissioners approved the questionnaire that 1 last mentioned in this column in the July edition. We plan on mailing it out to the entire list of taxpayers this autumn. Right of way work planned for this autumn. Residents are invited (and encouraged) to do some voluntary edging on the town property/right of way in front of their homes prior to the town’s starting some work this autumn. Over the years many Pine Knoll Shores homeowners have done a great job beautifying our town by landscaping past their property lines aU the way to the asphalt. Most of these properties look great, and these homeowners who maintain lush green carpets of grass make Pine Knoll Shores look wonderful. An unintended consequence of some of this landscaping across town property/right of way has been extended ponding of rainwater on the asphalt, which has long-term adverse effects on our public roads. More specifically, in many areas of town the level of the sod and fill is significantly higher than the road itself. When the sod and fill is placed directly up to the edge of the asphalt, it acts as a wall and prevents water runoff for extended periods, which can damage the road over time. Our recent wet weather has highlighted this issue. Pending board authorization at an upcoming meeting, we will conduct some road maintenance this fall. This will likely be two-phased: first we will have a street sweeper clear debris and overgrown grass to the edge of the asphalt. We will then have a machine edge the grass to create a cut for the rainwater to drain off the roadway. I suspect that even with our best effort, our edging on this town property/right of way will not be done as dehcately as a homeowner might do on his/her own. So this is an invitation to any property owners who wish to do so to edge on their own. We will instruct our contractor who does the edging to skip the properties that do this work on their own. If you plan on doing this work on your own, please send an email to Betty Carr at BCarr@townofpks.com, or call her at 247-4353, ext. 10. Please provide your name and street address. I again want to commend those who have done a great job keeping the town beautiful. 2014 Christmas parade. We have decided to simplify, or maybe even cancel, our Christmas parade this year and put more effort into the Pine Knoll Shores Christmas Flotilla. If we have a parade this year it will be on Saturday, December 6, but it will be a smaller scale, more local event than in the past—probably something similar in scale to our annual July 4th parade. More on this later. If you are interested in volunteering to help us plan this small event, please contact me at manager@townofPKS.com. Oyster shell recycling station. We will open a recycling station for oyster shells sometime soon. Many of you have seen these at the county disposal sites. We are partnering with the Coastal Federation on this project. Assistant Town Clerk Sarah Williams is a Coastal Federation Board member and has taken the lead here. We’re not sure on the timing, as they are applying for a grant to fund this. Stand by for the word on when this will be set up, and the location we will select. Results of the town’s financial audit. At the Board of Commissioners’ meeting on October 8 at 6 p.m. at town hall, the town’s audit report will be briefed. We will put the audit on the website as well. Second annual Pine Knoll Shores yard sale. On Saturday, October 4, the Parks and Recreation Committee (PARC) will sponsor its second annual town yard sale. Please see the “What’s Up With PARC?” article elsewhere in this issue of The Shoreline for details. The space/table fee proceeds will go to the all-volunteer Parks and Recreation Committee. All of your proceeds from sales are yours. Disposable bags for yard debris. We sell disposable yard waste bags at the front desk at town hall. Many citizens in town are already using these bags and we’d like to encourage more to do so. They are environmentally friendly, easy to work with and cheap. These bags were purchased tax-free from a local vendor, and we are selling them at cost. 1Z The Shoreline.:;! September 2014“
