shoreline Vol. 10, No. 23 A Shoreline Community, Pine Knoll Shores resident Walter Geist crosses the finish line with flags waving—and placed first in the Male 65 & Over category. Walt has built over 30 boats at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort, and built this kayak of fiberglass-covered strips of Atlantic white cedar. 2015 Kayak for the Warriors Events By Jean McDanal Another stellar year Pine Knoll Shores can be proud of its major show of volunteerism by residents that took place for the three events for the eighth annual Kayak for the Warriors. The first event, held on Saturday, May 30, was the Military Challenge Run. This inaugural 5K run began at the Clamdigger Inn, then moved across Salter Path Road to Beacons Reach. Most runners carried backpacks filled with bags of sand (20 lbs. for men and 15 lbs. for women) to simulate the weight of backpacks worn by our military in combat. Reductions in the amount of sand were based on additional funds raised for the event. Our military personnel generally carry backpacks weighing as much as 90 pounds; and that doesn’t even account for boots, body armor and other gear. It is difficult to fully appreciate the fortitude, stamina and grit our armed services personnel display. The winners were: Females 15 and Under Event Time Males 16-64 Event Time Evangeline Burke 0:40:40 Ryan Phelps 0:24:19 Females 16-65 Mike Carr 0:26:43 Meredith Hinton 0:28:11 Steve Taylor 0:29:49 Allyson Smith 0:30:35 Males Over 65 Eileen Hoover 0:32:27 John Hoover 0:36:22 1610 The Pine Knoll Shores Radio Station broadcasts 24 hours a day with weather and emergency info. The second event, the Warrior Reception and Auction held on Thursday, June 4, at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium, was attended by over 300 people. Attendees were welcomed with tables laden with a delicious assortment of foods donated from various local restaurants. Attendees snacked as they perused and bid on over 100 items in the silent auction and looked over items that would be up for bidding in the live auction. Many members of the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club and Women’s Club prepared baked goods for the dessert table. Thanks to Maureen Danehy for organizing her troop to keep the food refreshed. Auctioneers on Deck took over the live auction festivities, with Howard Henderson and Mary Ellen Eurich keeping the auction lively and fun.
