Angel Tree Success By Phyllis Makuck Once again in 2015 the Project Christmas Cheer Angel Tree program inspired a true spirit of giving and made the holiday a happy one for hundreds of Carteret County needy families. Locally, the Atlantic Beach Angel Tree site is the product of a partnership between Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church and St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church, but so many more helped make it a success. We had over 30 enthusiastic volunteers who managed the site, worked and shopped. More than 150 generous sponsors selected angels and bought and wrapped gifts. Many others made donations. Let me share one of the many wonderful stories: a young woman who had in the past been an Angel Tree child wanted to give back. She did so in a big way, selecting six angels. She and her gifts filled our Angel Tree room with joy. Unofficial statistics as of this writing are as follows: countywide. Project Christmas Cheer had 516 Angel Tree applications and 965 children. Shepherd of the Sea provided gifts for 257 of those children, 27 more than last year. Without the help of many of you, we could not have made Christmas merry for so many needy children. Thank you. Your Hearing You hear with your brain, not your ears. This direct relationship between your hearing and brain function is disrupted when you suffer from hearing loss. Studies show that individuals with hearing loss experience a 30-40 percent accelerated rate of cognitive decline. This decrease in brain stimulation may contribute to brain atrophy. The greater the rate of hearing loss the faster the decline of memory and thinking. Finally, hearing loss has been linked to a three-fold increase in risk of falling.* Exciting new hearing aid technology works to augment these natural processes for clearer, better hearing, just like the brain intended. ‘Frank Lin, M.D..
