Featured artists. The Mattie King Davis Art Gallery will feature artists Carol Roop and Craig Gurganus throughout the month of January. Both artists are local favorites. Ms. Roop’s stained-glass creations and Mr. Gurganus’ whimsical fish created from recycled surfboards are not to be missed. Semi-annual membership meeting. The BHA takes the opportunity to honor all volunteers at the membership meeting and encourages all to attend. The evening includes a potluck dinner, a short business meeting and the presentation of the Volunteer Awards. The meeting is on January 26 at 6 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Beaufort. Membership Drive Valentine Party. The Membership Drive Valentine Party will be held on Sunday, February 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. The BHA opens the buildings of the Beaufort Historic Site for current and prospective members to explore, which allows them to see how the BHA uses membership dollars to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Beaufort and Carteret County. Those considering membership or becoming a volunteer are encouraged to attend this event. For more information, call 728-5225, stop by the site’s visitor center or visit online at beauforthistoricsite.org. Marvin Creamer Recognized (Continued from page 1) He was recently honored by the university with a monument named “Endeavor.” It is shaped and scaled to recall the Globe Star, and is built of natural materials as befitting an outdoor classroom. At the monument’s center (the mast) rises a signpost with markers for destinations around the world. The sculpture is located in the heart of the campus, the home of the geography department that Mr. Creamer created. The monument pays tribute to him as an educator, scholar and adventurous pioneer. Sailing around the world at age 67 is not the only adventure Creamer has embraced. He describes himself as a prisoner of ideas, saying that if he has an idea he has to pursue it, whatever the cost in time, energy and courage (you can imagine there was no shortage of ridicule from those who felt that sailing around the world without benefit of navigation was pure folly). Ideas, he explains, are very powerful things. In 1955, in an initiative sponsored by Exxon, Cramer experimented with teaching geography from an airplane that resulted in two live television broadcasts. In 1980, the Glassboro State College Alumni Association recognized him as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and named him Professor Emeritus. Over the years, the geography department that he founded has earned numerous accolades from students and peers. In 1985, the venerable Cruising Club of America presented him with its Blue Water Medal, considered the Pulitzer of sailing. Mr. Creamer continues his teaching and scholarly research. Twice this past year he and his charming wife Elaine traveled to Rowan University where he shared his story with new audiences, met with geography classes and lectured to standing- room-only crowds. In 2013, colleagues, friends, family, students and fellow sailors raised $5,000 for the Marvin Creamer Scholarship, which is awarded to a student in the geography department who exemplifies the intellectual curiosity and spirit oi adventure that have been Creamer’s guiding principles. At home in Pine Knoll Shores, Mr. Creamer splits his own firewood and mows his own lawn. He can be seen almost daily riding his three-wheeled bike around the neighborhood. He has three children, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. His next milestone will be turning 100 on January 24. Family and friends are planning a festive affair to honor the captain.
