CAF Presents The Grains of Time
By Lilia Klee
Barbershop and contemporary harmonies at their best
Carteret Arts Forum (CAF) is pleased to present The Grains of Time, North
Carolina State University’s premiere men’s a cappella group. On campus they go by
“The Grains” and have performed for more than four decades.
Made up of 7 to 12 members at a time, The Grains is rooted in a rich tradition
of glee club- and barbershop-style harmony. At the same time, they have developed
a modern and contemporary style to arrive at a balanced repertoire. They bridge
collegiate a cappella with that of professional groups in ways that express their
musical skill and showmanship. The Grains have no outside directors, funding or
even a formal music major. , ttc u •
The group has traveled to Europe, Canada and throughout the US on their
annual tour. They have performed the National Anthem for the Atlanta Braves and
Golden State Warriors, competed in the International Championship of Collegiate
A Cappella (ICCA) in 2003, won awards for arrangements and performed during
presidential visits to the university.
The Grains of Time will perform on Sunday, February 21, at 4 p.m. at Carteret
County Theatre, 1311 Arendell Street in Morehead City. Tickets are $35 and can
be purchased online at carteretartsforum.com or at the door. CAF selected this
collegiate group of dynamic singers to highlight North Carolina talent an inspire
local youth. Students (school age and college with a valid ID) may purchase tickets
for only $5 as a service to the community. Email Bill Colbert at Wcolbert002@
gmail.com for more information.
The mission of Carteret Arts Forum is to bring enriching cultural experiences to
Carteret County and surrounding areas.
PIKSCO Happenings

Monthly update from the PIKSCO board. The Hammer Park renovation plan
with quotes should be in place by mid-February, to hopefuUy include a new ramp
for more user-friendly beach access. The electrical repair to the McNeill Park sittum
has been completed, and the security light at Hammer Park has been replaced.
PIKSCO park use. The availability of PIKSCO parks is a real added value
for Pine Knoll Shores. Community uses of the parks have included Kayak for
the Warriors events. Fourth of July parade, the Christmas flotilla. Senior Games ^
events, annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, the Christmas parade and the towns
Easter Egg Hunt. Individuals have used the parks for weddings, family reunions,
anniversary celebrations, family photography sessions and birthdays.
There is no charge for using the parks, and they may be reserved by calling the
PIKSCO office at the number shown below. w n
Data on PIKSCO gated parks. The number of gate entries recorded at Mcbkdl
Park in 2015 was 4,200 (69% from Pine KnoU Association and 31% from PIKSCO),
and 7,700 entries were recorded at Hammer Park during 2015 (63% from PIKSCO
and 37% from Pine Knoll Association).
Improving our parks via Spring Clean-up. In order to get a fresh-eye
approach, we plan to contact approximately six volunteers to join PIKSCO Parks
Committee members for a walk-through of our parks on Saturday, February 27,
and Saturday, March 5, for the purpose of identifying items that may need repair,
power washing, replacement, trimming, etc. This list of new items will be added to
our existing check list for the association’s Spring Clean-up, which will be planned
for March or April. The goal is to have our parks in good shape by May.
PIKSCO contact. For questions, concerns, to express a willingness to volunteer
or to provide feedback, contact Erica Reed at 247-4818, piksco@ec.rr.com, through
the website at piksco.com or by mail at P.O. Box 366, Atlantic Beach, NC 28512.
