American Music Festival will present
a concert on Saturday evening, April 9, at
8 p.m. at the History Museum of Carteret
County. Featured is the Enso String Quartet,
formed in 1999 and based in New York City
since 2007.
In keeping with the 2015-2016 seasons
theme of presenting Beethovens work
from each period, the quartet will present
Beethovens Harp Quartet Op. 74 from his
middle period. The other featured piece will
be Alberto Ginastera’s second string quartet in honor of the 100th anniversary of the
Argentine composers birthday. This promises to be a toe-tapping, rousing presentation.
The quartet members were all drawn to the string quartet repertoire for its richness
and diversity, and the ensemble is committed to exploring the full string repertoire.
They are described as “staggeringly brilliant” and “one of the eminent string quartets of
our era.”
Tickets may be reserved by calling 728-6152, or may be ordered from
americanmusicfestival.eventbrite.com. They may also be purchased at the History
Museum or at the door before the performance. For more information, visit
americanmusicfestival.org.
PKA News
ByAmiy Cox
As the weather slowly improves and we come out of hibernation and get back into
the swing of things, it is time to turn our attention to volunteerism. There are lots of
good organizations and reasons to volunteer across a wide spectrum of causes. Qne
of the ones closest to my heart is Pine Knoll Association (PKA). If every homeowner
donated one or two hours of effort each year, we would have more money in the budget
and would be able to maintain all common areas in absolute tip-top shape. Just a little
bit of effort goes a long way and is such a benefit to all.
Volunteer work opportunities have already started for 2016. In February we started
park clean-ups. In the weeks and months ahead, we wiU need volunteers to help
rebuild/replace the shower at Qcean Park, stain the sittum, replace/flip boards on the
docks and walkways, help with the PKA Facebook page, serve as park captains, learn
how to back up the gate card system, help stuff envelopes for the annual mailing, count
votes at the annual meeting, serve on the 2017 Auditing and Nominating committees,
help with the phone tree for volunteer events, etc. There are a variety of ways to help
out by donating an hour or two of your time.
The volunteer opportunities for March as of press time for this issue of The Shoreline are:
Wednesday, March 16—park clean-up, 1-4 p.m.
Friday, March 18—park clean-up, 1-4 p.m.
Saturday, March 19—park clean-up and rain date, 1-4 p.m.
Park clean-up involves loading up twigs and limbs, minor trimming, cleaning and
sweeping, picking up any trash, etc. Usually one or two park captains are around and
can help with details. Bring some work gloves, and dress appropriately for yard work.
Also, if you have rakes, pitchforks, pruning shears, chain saws, leaf blowers, etc., feel
free to bring those. Look for more up-to-date information and details on the PKA
website at pineknoUasspciation.com and the PKA community Facebook page.
Some basic maintenance and smaU repairs will be needed at Ocean Park, Hall
Haven, Brock Basin and Ramsey Park before Memorial Day weekend. Please check
both the PKA website and Facebook page for these and other opportunities.
It is last call for interested people to contact BiU Steenland at 240-1145 with
questions about and to express interest in running for the 2016-2017 PKA board. Oncc
elected at the annual meeting in June, it is a three-year term with a monthly board
meeting on the second Monday of each month at 9:30 a.m.
