SOFT WATER SOLUTIONS, LLC 252.222.3220 or 252.725.7464 4911 Bridges Street Ext. Morehead City, NC -l! A I Johnson Owner Will Johnson Service Coordinator Appreciate change Certainly you’ve heard the saying, “Change is the only constant,” which always seems to be true as time keeps passing. When we see change coming in Pine Knoll Shores, our first concern is the character of our town, and our first question is, “What’s good for Pine Knoll Shores over the next 10 years?” Sometimes we need to have a vision to be able to look over the horizon 10 years or more to make a decision. This is quite often the case with development. What is it, what will it look like, and how will it be in 10 years? This is the case of the property at the corner of Pine Knoll Boulevard and Salter Path Road. The property was owned by First Citizens Bank and has been on the market for a while. If you are not familiar with “cohousing,” pull up your favorite search engine and look at the term. Specifically look at “senior cohousing.” When you read about it, two significant names come up: Charles Durrett and Kathryn McCamant. They coined the word “cohousing.” About a month ago I attended one of their weekend workshops in Raleigh. Chuck and Kate are husband and wife and both are architects. They have done extensive research and have built several very successful cohousing projects around this country and in Denmark, where they have been doing this type of housing for many years. If you look closely, it just might make you think that history is repeating itself Extended families lived together for generations in earlier years in our nation’s history, but no more. Of course, today it’s not uncommon for a person’s parents, children or siblings to live on the other end of the country or the other side of the world. The cohousing concept gets people together as a small community to help each other. When I was going to the workshop, I expected to get the information, make some good contacts and go home. When I left the workshop I thought, “I could live in a community like this.” I got to know Chuck and Kate pretty well, and I had conversations about our potential. Chuck is going to be in our area sometime in September, and he asked if I thought we could gather 100 people to learn about the cohousing concept. If you take the time to look at this on the computer, please also take the time to email me at MayorJones@towno^ks.com with your thoughts. I’m grateful for your comments. Recycling reminder. If you are new to town or need recycling containers, we have a standing order at ACE Hardware in Atlantic Beach for 48- and 65-gallon recycling containers. They are blue and have the white recycle symbol on the side. Before you go to get your container, come to town hall and get a coupon for $5 off the purchase price. They’ll assemble it for you and deliver if necessary. We are having very positive results with our recycling tonnage going up steadily and our trash tonnage (where tipping fees are paid) declining. Thank you for participating in this and keeping our town’s cost (your trash fees) low. Ordinance reminder. Just in case you also didn’t know or didn’t remember, we have an ordinance that separates swimmers and fishermen. Most of this is about common sense and common courtesy. While we have certainly separated these two beach and ocean users, courtesy should be the word of the day when surfing or paddleboarding is mixing with swimmers. I am positive that between a child’s head and a surfboard, the child’s head would take the brunt of the hurt. These are public beaches for everyone, so like anything else, common sense and common courtesy in safety should prevail. Please share this information with your visitors. I thank you in advance. HOA summit. We held our second annual Homeowners Association Summit at town hall in mid-August. First, I want to thank all who participated and shared in our towns common interest. We had a great turnout and it was very nice to see many of the same faces as last year—that must mean you were reelected for doing an outstanding job. Without your help we would be missing a key ingredient to our town’s success as a team. Please enjoy the seasonal changes as fall rolls into our beautiful town. Fall is my favorite season. It won’t be long before the days seem much shorter and we’re remembering those hot days on the beach. Appreciate the change. 20‘S TheSHl8«i()fe«‘Fsept^Ki'S0W*''92
