BP ■PH Pine Knoll Shores police officer Corporal Cory Bishop—P/]oto by Ryan Thompson FROM THE DESK OF THE POLICE CHIEF Happenings Around the PoUce Department By Ryan Thompson, Pine Knoll Shores Police Chief The Pine Knoll Shores Police Department welcomed Cory Bishop as its newest full-time officer in January. Cory was brought on as a corporal and has been a part-time officer with us since July 2016. Corporal Bishop, a graduate of the Lenoir Community College Basic Law Enforcement Training program, is a native of Lenoir County. He comes to us from the Lenoir County EMS and previously was with the Morehead City Police Department. Corporal Bishop holds multiple training certifications, including Community Policing, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Boating Under the Influence, Alcohol Screening Devices, and Intox EC/IRII training (the instrument that tests suspected impaired drivers). Law enforcement was not Corporal Bishops first career as a first responder. He earned his EMT-Basic certification in 2008 and would go on to become an EMT-Paramedic in 2012. He also has plans to become a Medical Examiner (a trained medical professional who assists in suspicious or unnatural death cases and issues the death certificate) and a CPR instructor to further his ability to serve Pine Knoll Shores and the surrounding communities. Please join us in welcoming Corporal Bishop to our Pine Knoll Shores family I am pleased to have him as part of our team on a full-time basis and look forward to his contributions to the community. When you see him while he is on patrol, please stop and introduce yourself and say hello. Officer Joseph Patton went to the NC Justice Academy in early January and attended a 40-hour certification course to become a Field Training Officer. The goal of the Field Training Officer program is to provide the technical and personal skills to individuals in order for them to function as evaluators and trainers of recruits who have completed Basic Law Enforcement Training. It is a very demanding and challenging course, and we are proud to have another Field Training Officer in our department. Congratulations, Officer Patton. Scam of the Month: frozen pipes scam During very cold weather, a crooked home repairman claims that pipes under your home appear to be frozen, and tells you that the pipes will flood and cause structural damage if they are not repaired before they thaw. The scammer pretends to repair the pipes and then collects payment. It is recommended that if you are leaving town during the colder months of the year to turn your water off. If you have any questions on how to safely and properly turn your water off, please contact our Public Works Department and they will be happy to assist you. —Source: ncdoj.gov CONTENTS Age-Friendly Community 4 Pine Knoll Shores Commissioners Meeting 6 Country Club News g PIKSCO Happenings g Current Puzzle Solutions 9 Mayors Memo 9 At the Library 10 Garden Club 10 Current Sudoko 12 Have You Heard...? 12 Kramers Korner 13 Town Crier 14-15 Original Poetry Feature ig History of Pine Knoll Shores 19, 27 Fishing and Hunting 20 Women s Club 21 At the Aquarium 22 Book Talk 24 Events Calendar 25 Current Crossword 26 PKA News 27 Public Safety POLICE During December, there were 4 arrests; 17 911 hang-ups; 20 alarm activations; 10 animal calls; 18 assist Fire/EMS; 7 traffic hazards; 81 traffic stops; 25 citations issued (4 speeding, 1 stop sign/stop light; 3 registration/inspection, 2 license revoked/expired, 3 other traffic violations, 4 narcotics violations, 8 alcohol violations); 13 written warnings issued; 183 business checks; 308 residential checks; and 295 foot patrols. Report suspicious people or vehicles to dispatch (726-1911) so that the police can be notified. You are not “bothering” the police if you call to report something that doesn’t look right. They prefer to assess the situation rather than find out after the fact that you had noticed something and didn’t report it. Alert citizens are an asset to the community.
