At the Aquarium special programs and recurring weekly programs add to the fun and education opportunities at the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. Special programs: Fairy Day, March 11,9 a.m.-5 p.m. Put on some wings, a dash of glitter and let your imagination fly during this year’s annual fairy day, “From Fairies to Sea Serpents.” Build fairy and gnome houses on the nature trail, search for mermaid and fairy doors around the aquarium and make your own magic wand. Add to the fun and come dressed as a fairy, gnome, sea serpent or another mythical character; costumes are encouraged but not required. The program is free with admission or membership. Get Hooked Fishing School, March 18,8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Experts in a variety of fishing techniques present workshops throughout the day. Six sessions of instruction, plus prize drawings, giveaways and a catered lunch are included. All sessions are at the aquarium. The fee is $60 ($54 for aquarium members). “Winter Waterhirds” art exhibit. Through the end of March in the Spadefish Art Gallery. This new exhibit by artist Rosemary Kramer features hand-colored photography of water birds. The photographs were taken in the waterways of Morehead City and Beaufort from a shallow water skiff, which allowed the artist access to many different coastal areas. The exhibit is free with admission or membership. Weekly programs: Succulent Seafood. Mondays, 2-4 p.m. Local chefs demonstrate how to prepare fresh local seafood with a flourish. Sessions are held at the host restaurant and include a taste test. Ages 12 and up, $15. Behind the Scenes—Shark Snack. Tuesdays and Fridays, 2:30-3:30 p.m. Visit food preparation areas, animal holding areas and labs, and get an overhead view of the Living Shipwreck and watch staff aquarists feed the sharks. Ages 5 and up, $20. Toddler Time. Wednesdays, 9:30-10:20 a.m. & 10:30-11:20 a.m. Bring your little ones for a special time together enjoying stories, crafts, songs, puppets and animal encounters. Free with admission and registration is not required. Different themes and animal topics offered each week. Behind the Scenes—Aquarium at a Glance. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, 12-12:45 p.m. Visit animal food preparation areas, animal holding areas and labs and get a look at the Living Shipwreck exhibit from above. Ages 5 and up, $12. Behind the Scenes—Aquarium Close Encounters. Saturdays, 2-3:30 p.m. Visit labs and holding areas, help with food preparation and feed the animals in this thorough behind-the-scenes tour that includes a look at the Living Shipwreck from above. Ages 8 and up, $20. Non-emergent EMERGENCY patients can now wait at HOME rather than in the ED waiting area.'
