‘jg^q moil 03 E Knoll Shores Commissioners Meeting By Paige Gillespie The regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners was held on March 7 at town hall. All commissioners were present. There were 37 members of the public in attendance. During the public comment session, 12 people spoke in support of keeping the crosswalks and ensuring the safety of pedestrians and motorists. After further discussion on the crosswalks, Commissioner Corsello made a motion to keep the crosswalks and to look into reducing the speed limit to 35 mph during the season, acquiring signs similar to the ones in front of the Coral Bay Club and the possibility of installing lights similar to the one in front of the Dollar General in Atlantic Beach. . Commissioner Brodman suggested instituting a program similar to the Click-it-or-Ticket campaign to educate pedestrians and motorists. Commissioner Goetzinger suggested looking into streetlights at the crosswalks. The board voted unanimously to keep the crosswalks and look into these enhancements. Town Manager Brian Kramer reported on several items: • The tree removal project by Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative (CCEC) along Highway 58 has begun, and is expected to take about two months to complete. A representative from Pine Knoll Shores will be on site during the work. • Mr. Kramer reported that Senate Bill 126 dealing with the distribution of local sales tax has been filed again. Please see “Kramer s Korner” in this issue of The Shoreline for details. • Plans on the 2010 Pine Knoll Shores-Atlantic Beach water connection have been provided to Stroud Engineering to be shared with the Bogue Banks Water Commission in an ongoing effort to connect the western end of our water system to our neighboring system to the west. • The sidewalk between Mimosa and Arborvitae is awaiting the railings and final inspection. • The curb restoration project to reinforce the corners at Oakleaf Drive, Mimosa Boulevard and Pine Knoll Boulevard is underway. • The start of the 90-day window for flood map appeals is now tentatively scheduled to begin in May or June. • The new flag pole for the Public Safety Building has been delivered. Installation and dedication will be announced later. • Mapping of the towns water system is ongoing. During the public hearing for the rezoning of 114 Salter Path Road, no one spoke. The board voted unanimously to allow the linen facility to stay and convert the conditional use district to a conditional zone. Under New Business, the board discussed a non-compliant dock at 108 Hickory Court. Town Manager Kramer recommended allowing the dock to remain and to examine the existing code to determine if the dock provisions in the Pine Knoll Shores code book are applicable in 2017. The code may be rewritten and the owner of this dock will be notified of his compliance or non-compliance at that time. Finance Officer Julie Anderson recommended idle funds be invested in ways to achieve more attractive returns. The board voted unanimously to move forward with her’ recommendations. The board also voted unanimously to approve the designated reserve allocations recommended by the Finance Committee. Ms. Anderson also reported that tax collections are at 99.2% and beach tax collections are 98.9% Police Chief Thompson reported that the department had a risk assessment performed and it was suggested that more canine equipment is needed. A gift of this equipment from a neighboring town that was no longer using it saved our police department about $1,000. Public Services Director Sonny Cunningham reported that he would be interviewing for a Public Works position. He also noted that the towns bucket truck is having some electrical problems. • Fire Chief Baker reported that the Office of the State Fire Marshal with the NC Department of Insurance performed an inspection of the department. Town Clerk Sarah Williams reported that a vehicle that is no longer needed by the VIPS program has been sold.
