Featured artwork. Throughout the month of July, the art gallery will showcase the
artwork of professional artist and instructor Lena Ennis. Lena grew up on the Crystal
Coast and began her life in art at an early age, learning to draw and paint from her
grandmother, a southwestern landscape artist. Lena attended the School of Art at East
Carolina University and became a commercial artist, working in advertising and then
as a fine art freelance artist. Her art has been commissioned by such organizations as
the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, the NC
Seafood Festival, Sound Bank and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, along with
many other corporate institutions and individuals around the globe, and has earned
local, national and international art awards. Currently, her art has been selected for
the 2017 North Carolina Ducks Unlimited sponsorship print of the year. Lena works
in many different mediums, but focuses on graphite drawing and oil painting in a
traditional, realistic “Old Masters” style. The world around her is her subject matter,
and she focuses on value and how light and shadow work together to create the illusion
of three dimensions on a flat surface.
The showcase will again feature the pottery of Nancy Newman, a potter from
Onslow County who produces a wide variety of functional ware. She taught elementary
school for 33 years, and toward the end of her teaching career began to work in the
medium of clay. Through the instruction of seasoned artists and attendance in a variety
of workshops by master potters, her skills have grown. All of the stoneware pieces she
creates are functional and food safe, and she has customized many of her vessels by
incorporating nautical elements. She can be reached by phone at 910-346-9156 or via
email her at nnewman7981@hotmail.com.
There is no reception for the month of July.
