O' PIKSCO Happenings By Buz Jenkins We received many compliments on the beauty of Garner and McNeill parks by out-of-town participants in the recent Kayak for the Warriors events. Thanks to the many PIKSCO members who worked as volunteers during the three K4TW events. Also, thanks to the board members and volunteers who worked hard getting the parks in great shape. The board set the date for the annual membership meeting on July 15 at 4:30 p.m. at McNeill Park. All PIKSCO homeowners are invited to attend this meeting, which will include a hotdog cookout. Notifications have been sent out announcing the payment of annual fees and the renewal of kayak and canoe rack fees. Homeowners are reminded that the kayak and canoe racks are for use by renters only. If you are not renting a rack, do not use them. Kayaks or canoes belonging to nonrenters will be removed. Boaters are reminded that the dock at McNeill Park is for loading and unloading only. It is not a day dock, and boaters should not tie up to this dock for extended periods of time. New trash cans have been purchased for Hammer and Garner parks to replace the ones we have been leasing from Waste Industries. The purchase of these cans will be offset in a few months and will eliminate our monthly lease costs. The joint venture between the Pine Knoll Shores Parks and Recreation Committee and PIKSCO to upgrade the playground equipment at Garner and McNeill parks is complete. We would like to thank Leann Sanders and her team for their dedication and hard work on behalf of the many children who live in and visit our town. The town has donated the old public safety building 40-foot flag pole to PIKSCO. We are planning to erect this flag pole near the canal entrance at McNeill Park. In addition to its patriotic value, this pole will serve as a navigation aid for boaters. Committee Seeks Members Emphasis on bike/pedestrian trail A volunteer committee is forming to investigate the possibility of a bike/ pedestrian trail in Pine Knoll Shores that would run from the Bogue Banks Library building to the beach access parking lot just east of The Inn at Pine Knoll Shores (formerly the Clamdigger). Such a trail would provide the opportunity to travel from Atlantic Beach to Beacons Reach without the use of Highway 58 for most of the town. The trail would traverse the state-owned land in this area, which is located on the north side of Highway 58, and would be similar to the trails found at Fort Macon. The committee will work with the Pine Knoll Shores Board of Commissioners and town resident Bob Taber, who is the Coastal Region Trails Specialist with the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation to discover the availability of grants to assist in the building of the trail. In addition, committee members will seek advice from the staff at Fort Macon and Friends of Fort Macon, who have acquired similar grants for the trails at the Fort. Those interested in serving on this committee should contact Martha Edwards at edwardsmartha@hotmail.com, 726-7429, or 413-387-8447. We continue to improve our website; visit it at piksco.com to obtain timely information that homeowners need. Look for a new Hammer Park volunteer sign up link on the website under Parks/Hammer. We are always looking for residents who would like to serve and are willing to volunteer a few hours of their time and expertise. We need your help to keep PIKSCO parks looking good, and we need suggestions for changes that we can make to improve our life here in paradise. PIKSCO contact. For questions, concerns, to express a willingness to volunteer or to provide feedback, contact Erica Reed at 247-4818, piksco@ec.rr.com, through the website at piksco.com or by mail at P.O.
