PKS History Elut)if Comes Home By Phyllis Makuck Martin Luther King famously said, “We are made by history” A lesser-known writer, Ruskin Bond, provided a similar thought; “The past is always with us, for it feeds the present.” Our towns history has certainly influenced our present, and it may help shape our future. In keeping with that theme, the Board of Commissioners’ room in town haU has a new look. Large panels from “Beach Town in a Forest: the Story of Pine Knoll Shores,” the history exhibit that had been on display at the Carteret County History Museum in Morehead City for the past year, have replaced the old paper timeline on the board room’s east wall. The invitation for the exhibit, the state award the museum won for the exhibit, as well as a Roosevelt family photograph and genealogy graphic are to the right as one enters the room. To one’s immediate left are framed photographs of past commissioners and mayors. On the far left is a newly crafted, colorful timeline with- graphics—a perfect match for the large exhibit panels. Leading the effort to move and enhance the History Museum exhibit was the town’s History Committee—Martha Edwards, Clark Edwards, Jean Macheca, Phyllis Makuck and Michelle Powers-led by Walt Zaenker. Under Walt’s guidance, Howard Henderson did the careful work of hanging exhibit items. n . Whether or not you saw the original “Beach Town in a Forest” at the History Museum, a visit to the board room at town hall to view this display will prove worth your time. jr.
