Garaen Club By Clare Winslow Garden Club President Susan King welcomed members to a brief business meeting on November 8 prior to the program of the day, which had all club members beautifying and cleaning up the towns gardens. She reported that she and several members who attended the October district meeting of the North Carolina Garden Club in Jacksonville learned many interesting facts about various garden topics. She announced that the Garden Club had contributed $100 to the Hope For The Warriors Angel Tree at town hall and also told members that since 2017 is the 100th year anniversary celebration of distributing poppy seeds to commemorate the end of World War 1, she had ordered 100,000 seeds for them to scatter throughout Pine Knoll Shores. Arleen Graczewski told members that the lighting ceremony on November 9 at the Blue Star Memorial at Pine Knoll Boulevard and Highway 58 and the wine and cheese gathering at town hall afterward had to be postponed—and that a later date will be announced. JoAnn Shallcross reminded everyone of the clubs Christmas luncheon at The Country Club of the Crystal Coast on December 13. Vice President Jean McDanal invited all members to a workshop at the fire station on December 4 from 9 a.m. to noon to help create wreaths and swags to decorate the town, and then showed members the logo that had been chosen to be used on the newly created Garden Club brochure. She again reminded members of the importance of wearing their orange vests while working in the town gardens. Gini Stambaugh told members that she had 80 pairs of the light nylon blend Atlas garden gloves with a Nitrile coating to sell for $6 a pair, which is several dollars less than the same gloves in local stores. Ilene Karlsson reported on the clubs proposed trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh on Friday, March 23, with more details to follow. Kay Howe announced that 122 evergreen Christmas wreaths had been sold and said that extra wreaths will be available in case anyone missed ordering one. After President King adjourned the meeting, all present members dispersed to the towns gardens to pick up shovels to put out the mulch and pine straw that had been placed in giant piles beside each garden. After their work detail was completed, everyone returned to town hall for lunch. Visitors and guests are always welcome to attend Garden Club meetings, which are held at town hall every second Wednesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments, followed by the program at 10 o’clock.
