McBain, President of Marshall Field & Company, was born at Grand Rapids, Michigan, February 9, 1902. Upon completion of his academic education in 1922 he came to Marshall Field & Company as a bill adjuster in the Retail Division. From 1924 to 1936 Mr. McBain gained wide ex perience in the organization, serving successfully as Secretary to the President, in the real estate and tax departments, as the first general manager of the Merchandising Mart, as assistant to the Pres ident and assistant treasurer, and as general mana ger of the Manufacturing Division. Mr. McBain was elected Vice-President on March 10, 1936, assuming the duties of assistant general manager of the retail store. He became First Vice-President in 1937 and a Director of the Company in 1938. During 1938 and 1939 he was in charge of the Manufacturing Division. On April 5, 1940, Mr. McBain was appointed general mana ger of the retail stores in downtown Chicago and in Evanston, Oak Park, and Lake Forest. He was elected President of the Company February 2, 1943. Those of Us in the Manufacturing Division have always felt we had a real friend in President Mc Bain. He has been officially connected with the Manufacturing Division one way or another since 1935, and has often visited the Mills. In his visit here at the Mill December 7 to 9, he will have a chance to greet many of his old friends and to keep up with the developments in this part of the business. HUGHSTON M. McBAIN Retirement Program Is Approved The Retirement Program, outlined to employes of the Manufacturing Divi sion by Mr. Hodges on October 22, and fully explained in the booklets pre pared by Mr. McBain, was approved by shareholders at a special meeting on November 15th. The vote was 1,471,743 shares for the Program and 43,825 shares against it. The Program will go into effect December 1, 1943, subject to approval by the United States Treasury Depart ment. Wilson has issued invitations to approximately 125 men and women who have been regu larly employed by Marshall Field & Company with an unbroken record of service for a period of 25 years or longer to attend a dinner meeting at the Central Y. M. C. A. on Tuesday even ing, December 7, at 6:30 o’clock. The purpose of this meeting is to organize a Twenty-Five Year Club among these employes. Mr. McBain, President, and Mr. Hodges, Vice-President of Marshall Field & Co., will be present and assist in the organization of this club.
