MILL WHISTLE Issued every Two Weeks by and for the Em ployees of Fieldcrest Mil's, Division of Marshall Field & Company, Inc., Spray, North Carolina. VOLUME SIX NUMBER TWENTY-ONE MONDAY, APRIL 28, 1947 Dr. McGehee To Speak At Purdue University Dr. William McGehee, director of per sonnel research, will go to LaFayette, Ind., the latter part of this week where he will appear on the program at the Personnel Testing Institute at Purdue University. He will lead a conference Thursday afternoon devoted to instruc tion in the details of testing and select ing procedures. The Institute is held at Purdue twice each year under auspices of the division of applied psychology. The meeting will have representatives from 35 leading in dustries of the middle west. Schools’ Vice-Chairman J. O. Thomas, assistant lo the director of industrial and public relations, Fieldcrest Mills, was named vice-chair man of the Rockingham County Board ^)f Education at the organization meet ing at Wentworth April 14. E. S. Powell, Reidsville insurance man, was named chairman. Other mem bers are Jesse L. Roberts, Madison; L. W. Matthews, Stoneville; J. Benton Stacey, Rulfin. W. W. BARKSDALE Two Leaksvilie Men Receive Promotions Curtis Lea Goes to Nev/ York Sales Office; Bill Barksdale Is New Store Manaj^er Curtis Lea, manager of the EmplCyees’ Store since June 1946, will join the Com pany’s- sales organization May 1 and after June-1 will be located in the New York office where he will work under Arthur S. Thompson, sales manager for domestics. William W. Barksdale, of the Physical Testing Laboratory, will be ti'ansferred to the store replacing Lea. In accordance with the policy estab lished several years ago for future sales men, Lea will spend some time in the mills learning how the products arc manufactured. Fe will learn something of the designing and cost departments and will study how the products are packed and shipped. A native of Leaksvilie, Lea worked at Chandler Drug company for 10 years prior to entering military service. He was overseas in Germany for 18 months CURTIS LEA serving as first sergeant with the Ninth Division, GOth Infantry. He joined Field crest Mills eight days after receiving his discharge. His chief hobby is collecting old coins although he calls himself a baseball fa natic. Lea is married to the former Miss Pearl Shorter of Leaksvilie and they have one daughter, Jeritta. Barksdale is a Leaksvilie native and joined the Company in 1935 at the Bed spread Mill. He worked in the Finish ing Department and the Weave Room before being transferred to the Labor atory in 1937. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1941 and received training at the airplane and engine maintenance school at Keesler Field, Miss. He went overseas in April 1942 and served 33 months in the Pacific with the 7th Air Force. He was discharged in September 1945 as a technical sergeant and return ed to the Laboratory where he was plac ed in charge of Physical Testing under Director J. F. Byrd. Barksdale is married to the former Miss Daisy Chapman, of Gulfport, Miss. They have a daughter, Judy, one year old.
