He began as a student operator and worked through the plant. He later served in a super visory capacity in the chemical, spin ning and service departments. He went on active duty as a lieuten ant in the Navy in August 1944 and served until 1946, a part of the time in the Pacific theatre of operations. He was attached to the Office of Research and Invention and did a great deal of development work on the tropic-proof ing of equipment and supplies. He re turned to Du Pont upon his retirement from naval service and remained there until coming with Fieldcrest.
