Spray Recreation Park Draper Defeats Durham In Checker Tournament (Continued from Page One) vacation Bible schools by various churches. Civic clubs and church groups make frequent use of the picnic grounds. The Rockingham County Li brary bookmobile and lending library, which visits the playground each Thurs day at 4:00 p. m., has done a big busi ness during the summer months. Ernest B. Smith, general secretary of the Tri-City Y. M. C. A.’s, stated that the service clubs of the Tri-Cities have cooperated splendidly In provid ing equipment and assisting in the im provement of the Spray Recreation Park. The Exchange Club gave $200 for equipment, and the Rotary Club gave $300 for a new backstop for the softball field. The Spray Civic Associa tion, representing all the mills of the community, is making funds available for a field house for storage of supplies and equipment, and to build a fence around the children’s playground. The Spray Civic Association also will con tribute to the cost of supervision and maintenance of the grounds. The Lions Club has appropriated a substantial sum for playground equipment which will be forthcoming. The five-acre plot contains picnic grounds and shelter with tAO outdoor fireplaces, tables, etc. There is a light ed softball field, a volley ball, bad minton, and paddle tennis court, two regular tennis courts, one croquet court and several horseshoe courts. Then there are the children’s playgrounds containing swings and a slide. Playground Staff The playground staff consists of J. O. Burnette, supervisor of summer activi ties for the Y. M. C. A.’s outdoor pro gram, who is directly in charge, assist ed by Joe Robertson and Winford Hoover, playground instructors. A horseshoe tournament which began on July 12 will be completed July 22. The 12 men with the highest qualifying scores will engage in the championship match Saturday, July 24, at the Recrea tion Park starting at 2:30 p. m. Specta tors are invited. On July 19 the tennis tournament will start. The competition will include singles for ladies, men, and boys, doubles in the same group and mixed doubles. Matches are played at the con venience of the participants, most of them after 5 p. m. Volley ball players in the Tri-Cities are invited to form teams and enter the tournament to be played at the Spray Recreation Park the week be ginning July 26. Teams from churches, civic clubs and other organizations are particularly desired. There is no entry fee and a lot of fun is offered. At pres ent the Y. M. C. A.’s have one court at Spray Recreation Park, and interested groups are invited to use this court for practice and for play. I"! i . X i1 ^ I A team led by G. C. Swinney, assistant foreman of the Blanket Mill Jack Spin ning Department, defeated a Durham team 105 to 95 in the checker tournament held at Draper Y. M. C. A. recently. The tournament got underway at 2:00 p. m., and with only a brief pause for supper, continued until 9:30 p. m. The team picked by Mr. Swinney included George Walker, Danville, the Vir ginia champion; Raymond Walker, Danville; Charlie Cheshire and D. L. Minter, outstanding players of Martinsville, Virginia. The opposing team, consisting of Durham business men, included Claude Luquire, George P. Moore, S. B. Brockwell, R. N. King, and Fuller Karriker. Mr. Swinney won 28 points out of a possible 40 to lead the Draper team. George Walker, the Virginia champion, w’as next on the Draper side with 27 points. George P. Moore led Durham with 23 points. Roger L. Wilkes Attends Seminar in Interviewing Roger L. Wilkes, Spray Personnel manager of Fieldcrest Mills, attended a two-day seminar in interviewing at the University of North Carolina held July 10-11. Mr. Wilkes was chairman of a com mittee on Questions and presented a final committee report to Prof. R. P. Calhoon of the University School of Commerce. The seminar spent two days in ex- aming interviewing practices and in developing standards of sound pro cedure for employment. Be smart: Play Safe. Products Of Mills To Be Exhibited At New York Convention Products of Fieldcrest Mills will have a prominent place in the North Carolina exhibit at the Lions International con vention at Madison Square Garden, New York, July 26-29. Each of the 48 states will have displays in the con vention headquarters showing manu factured, agricultural or other chief products of the state. W. A. Gardner, of the Engineering Dept., R. L.
