Mrs. Landress Joins
Fieldcrest Mills As
Head Of Testing Lab
Louise Landress, formerly of Clem-
son, S. C., joined Fieldcrest Mills De
cember 13 as head of the physical test
ing laboratory in the Research and
Quality Control Dept. Mrs. Landress
prior to coming here was for eight years
connected with the U. S. Dept, of Agri
culture fiber testing laboratory at Clem-
son college. She previously had worked
at Clemson College in various capaci
ties for several years.
She has moved to Leaksville and is
making her home with Mrs. Lucile
Hickerson on Henry street. Mrs. Lan
dress has a son, 13 years old, who is at
tending junior high school at Clemson.
NOTICE
Employees in certain mills who did
not work the week following Christmas
because of no work available are being
given partial earnings forms by their
foremen for the purpose of filing claims
for unemployment benefits.
As a convenience to employees of
the Blanket and Sheeting Mills the
local State Employment Service is
setting up a temporary office at the
Draper Personnel Department on
Thursday and Friday, January 13 and
14. This office will be open from 9 a. m.
to 5 p. m. during which time the claims
may be filed.
Employment Service officials pointed
cut that war veterans who have not
previously filed such claims, should
bring their discharge certificates with
them.
Employees of other mills in the Tri-
Cities who are eligible to file claims
should present their partial earnings

Office in the Municipal Building in
Spray.
Mills That Stood Extra
Week Will Get Christmas
Day Pay On January 21
Because of these mills’ standing the
week following Christmas, Christmas
Day pay checks for the Blanket, Sheet
ing, Finishing and Hosiery Mills will
be delayed one week and will, therefore,
be distributed to those eligible on Fri
day January 21, instead of on January
14. .

Books On Textiles
Added To Library
Miss Marianne Martin, librarian, an
nounces that the Rockingham County
Library has purchased two specialized
books recently which will be of inter
est to persons in the textile industry.
One of these is “Rayon Technology”
prepared by the Textile Research De
partment ot the American Viscose Cor
poration.
This book has been prepared to meet
the needs of mill men, teachers, stu
dents, and others who want to know
the better ways of processing rayon
into yarn, griege goods, and finished
fabrics. It covers all phases of textile
manufacturing including the spinning
of rayon staple by the three principal
systems and discusses weaving, knit
ting, and dyeing and finishing.
Tne second book is “Applied Textiles”
written by George E. Tinton and Jos
eph J. Pizzuto. This volume was writ
ten to meet the needs of those who
would like to know about textiles from
the raw materials to the finished fabric.
Major emphasis is given to identifica
tion of fabrics, physical and chemical
testing of textiles, care of clothing, spot
and stain removal, and similar subjects.
Employees Store Cards
Have Been Distributed
New 1949 employee identification
cards for use at the Employees Store
have been issued in the mills and of
fices to all employees who were on the
payroll as of January 1. Any employee
who failed to receive his card is re
quested to see his foreman and get his
identification card. The card must be
signed by the employee before presen
tation at the store. Employees retired
under the Marshall Field & Company
retirement program retain their store
privileges and identification cards have
been mailed to this group at their
homes.
Florida Scouts Visit
Bedspread And Karastan
A dozen senior Boy Scouts from the
Central Scout area in Florida visited
the Karastan and Bedspread Mills
Wednesday, December 29, as a part of
their trip to North Carolina. The group
was headed by Harold Morgan, field
scout executive of Daytona Beach, Fla.
