MILL WHISTLE Evening Swimmers Monica White (at top) and Thelma Cassell, employees of the Electric Blanket Mill, seem to be getting up in the world as they climb the diving tower at the Leaksville “Y” swimming pool. Evening swimming hours at the pool are proving popular with large numbers of grown-ups visiting the pool on Mon days, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fri days from 7 to 9 p. m. A “Learn-to- Swim” class for adults will be held at the pool the week beginning August 6. The class is being organized now and indications are there will be a sizable group taking the course. Those interested in joining the class may secure information by telephoning the Leaksville Y. M. C. A. (Phone 438.) Chaplain Improving Following Operation Rev. J. K. McConnell, Fieldcrest Mills industrial chaplain, is recuperating fol lowing an appendectomy at Leaksville Hospital. Members' of the family stated Friday that he was getting along satis factorily and was expected to be able to leave the hospital and return to his home during the week-end. The chap lain has a host of friends throughout the section who wish him a speedy re covery. Large Group From Fieldcrest Attends Blue Ridge Meeting Fieldcrest Mills was well represented at the 32nd annual Southern Industrial Relations Conference at Blue Ridge July 18-21. Those attending included R. L. Ellis, assistant foreman, Bed spread Inspection; Jack Baker, Finish ing napping foreman; T. B. Hamrick, foreman, Sheeting Weave Room; Char les Harper, foreman of carding and spinning. Towel Mill; M. P. Miller, di rector of industrial and public relations; Jones W. Norman, personnel director; Marvin McMichael, assistant foreman. Blanket wool picking; and A. E. Shu mate, foreman, Karastan dyeing. Mr. Miller, a member of the confer ence committee, presided over the open ing session Wednesday evening. He at tended the Southern Conference of In dustrial Executives at the Battery Park Hotel in Asheville Wednesday preced ing opening of the Blue Ridge meeting. Luther H. Hodges of Leaksville, an active director of the American Thread Company who prior to his resignation to accept an ECA assignment in Ger many was vice president of Marshall Field & Company and general manager of Fieldcrest Mills, addressed the con ference Friday evening on “How Is In dustry Doing in Europe?” Rev. J. K. McConnell, industrial chap lain, was scheduled to attend but could not go because of illness. T. P. Shinn attended the conference representing the Tri-City Y.M.C.A.’s and the Y.M.CA. Canteen service. Joe Leaderman Gives |500 To Park Project A check for $500 from Joe Leader man, head of Southern Jobbing House in Baltimore, has been received by the Draper Y’s Men’s Club in support of their project at the Draper Community Park. The money will be used to im prove and purchase playground equip ment for the park which is sponsored jointly by the Draper Y. M. C. A., the Y’s Men’s Club and the Draper Ameri can Legion. A Fieldcrest Mills customer for more than 30 years, Mr. Leaderman has al ways taken an interest in the Tri-City community and its people. Funds Being Raised To Help Blue Baby Pretty, blue-eyed Donnie Rodgers, 22-months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh Rodgers of Draper, has been given only a short while to live unless he can have a delicate and expensive heart operation. Specialists at Johns Hopkins Hospital have scheduled the operation for July 30. A movement is under way in the Tri- Cities to raise funds that will help to defray costs of the operation and make it possible for Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers to accompany their only child to Baltimore for the operation. Donnie’s father is employed in the Blanket Mill Spinning Dept, and his mother (Esther) formerly worked in the same department. The Draper branch of the Leaks ville Bank and Trust Company has opened an account in the name of the “Donnie Rodgers Fund” and contribu tions may be mailed or sent there. The Draper Y’s Men’s club will organize a team of workers to pick up money or checks at homes in Draper and vicinity. Donors should call Harold Squires (860-J).
