The store is Stix Baer and Fuller’s (St. Louis) new V/estwoods store which was opened on August 15 at what has been described as the crossroads of St. Louis county. According to Fieldcrest Salesman Owen Due, about two weeks before it opened a store official was conducting a group of Very Important People through the new store. As they ob served all the new fixtures, color schemes, and luxurious features they stepped over, past and around a crew of hard-working plumbers, carpenters, clerks and guards, all intent on getting the store ready for the grand opening. In the course of the tour, they were mysteriously joined by a woman and two small children who contentedly listened to all the fascinating details be ing explained to the VIPs. As they progressed, she saw them setting up the Royal Velvet stock and immediately stopped the party by an nouncing that was just what she want ed. As it happened, the domestics buy er was in the group, and he explained that the store was not yet open for business but he woud be glad to have the merchandise shipped from the ware house. He then sat down and wrote out her order, thus recording the first sale in the new store! The color of the lady’s choice? Canta loupe. 2 ments, Howard Barton; constitution, W. B. Lucas. A special event on the program was the presentation of a life membership card and a plaque to A. D. Weaver of the Synthetic Fabrics Mill, a charter member of the Council who recently completed 50 years of continuous ser vice with the Company. The presenta tion was made by Edward J. Hoechst, director of industrial relations. A feature of the program much en joyed by the audience were selections by John Sealy, of Madison, well- known and talented tenor. Mrs. Sealy was his accompanist. Charter Members Honored Charter members were accorded spe cial honors. As each entered the build ing, a red rose was pinned on him and he was escorted to the section of seats reserved for charter members and their wives. They were asked to stand for recognition during the pro gram and later were photographed as a group with Governor Hodges, him self a charter member of the Council. Of the 45 charter members still in the Council, 37 were present for the anni versary meeting. Prior to the rrogram in the auditori um, Governor Hodges was honored at a dinner at Meadow Greens Country Club, to which Council officers, com pany officials and the mayors of Leaksville, Spray, and Draper were in vited. In his address. Governor Hodges touched on several challenges faced by North Carolina at the present and in the future. He expressed his belief that challenges can be met and problems solved through the things that the Council stands for—co-operative ef fort and service for the common good. Referring to the Fieldcrest Mills, Inc. pension plan and taking note of the fact that a number of the Council”s charter members are now retired, he called for better use of the “talents and experience of our retired people in serving their communities, counties, and state.” Urges Use of Talents “Why can’t we urge our retired citi zens to volunteer their talents on such worthwhile community projects as the development of a new industry or the many problems which face our politi cal sub-divisions?” Governor Hodges asked. He referred to the Golden Age Club at Consolidated Central YMCA, com prised mainly of retired Fieldcresters, and suggested that the Club take the lead in North Carolina in forming a state-wide group for retired employees, who could voluntarily serve their state and their community. “We should all be willing to serve our government in some capacity and take part in the greatest business in our state and in the world,” Governor Hodges declared.
