Local Students See Engineering Show Fieldcrest Technical Seminar Lends Assistance To Boost Interest In Engineering A group of 35 science students from ^ri-City high school attended the an- *^'^al engineering show at the Duke University College of Engineering m Parham, Friday, March 16. After visit- the engineering show where they ®aw many engineering and scientific ®^hibits, the students were given a tour the west campus where they visited ^he physics and science laboratories, Duke Chapel and other points of 'ftterest. B. B. Olive, a member of the steering 5^ornmittee for the seminars said, ‘ There is currently a nationwide movement to ®f>couraee the youth of the nation in ® better understanding of science and ®f*gineering. We believe that the Field- '^rest Technical Seminar has made a Contribution along this line by help- local students to attend the engi- *ieering show.” Bedspread Mill Gets New Smoking Booths For the convenience of employees and to minimize the danger of smoking in congested areas or in places where there is a definite fire hazard, smokmg booths have been installed in the card ing, spinning, winding and weaving de partments at the Bedspread Mill and will go into use Tuesday, April 3. Such booths have been found effec tive in eliminating congestion and loi tering in rest rooms and in improving housekeeping, making a cleaner and better place to work. Smoking booths earlier were installed in some departments at the Towel and Blanket Mills. A booth in the Karastan weave room will be put into use during this week. Jr. Council Meeting Dr. R. O. Respess, pastor of the First Christian Church, Spray, will speak to members of the Junior Carolina Coun cil at their meeting Tuesday, April 10 at 7:30 p. m. at Central Y.M.C.A. Announcement of the meeting was made by Hilda Grogan, program chair man, who urged all mem'-ers to attend. Officers will be ele-ted ts serve dur ing the new Council year. Dr. Respess came to Leaksville- Spray from pastorates in Florida. He received his doctor’s degree from the College of Philosophy, Kansas City. Fieldale Clubs Will Sponsor Talent Show Plan Fund-Raising Project To Benefit Swimming Pool B. K. Rives, president of the Fiel dale Service Club, and Bruce Cox, pres ident of the Rotary Club, have an nounced plans for a “Talent Show” to be presented Friday, April 27. The show will be a joint undertaking of the two clubs for the benefit of the Com munity Center swimming pool fund. A search for talented young people to appear in the show is already under way. Application forms for contestants may be obtained from members of both clubs and at Martinsville and Hen ry county high schools. Contestants will be entered in three classifications—popular, novelty, and classical. First prizes are $50 war bonds and second prizes of $25 bonds will be awarded in each classification. Coupled with the “Talent Show” will be a baby contest in which resi dents will be asked to vote for king, queen, prini^e, and princess. D. E. Simons is baby contest chairman. Members of the talent committee are the Rev. C. T. Boyd, chairman; Allen Bobbitt, Oren R. Counts, Grover Over by, J. M. Rimmer, Mr. Rives and Leon ard Stultz. Alfred, department sales mana ger, Electric Blanket Mill, and chair man of the electric housewares section of the National Electrical Manufactur ers association, participated in a pro gram over the ABC 300-station network March 29. He was interviewed by Jo Halpin on the “Your Better Tomorrow Show” in a presentation recreating the recent “Fashions in Electric Housewares Liv ing” show at which Maggi McNellis was the hostess.
