Fieldcrest Community Fund Drive Under Way The Tri-City Community Fund cam paign at Fieldcrest was still in progress as The Mill Whistle went to press Fri- Solicitations began Monday, Febru ary 10 and are expected to be completed ®arly this week. Each employee was to contacted and asked to pledge a do- *iation of approximately one day’s pay. Campaign officials said the results at fieldcrest would be announced as soon as known, through The Leaksville News and The Mill Whistle. A community- ''^ide report meeting is scheduled for Thursday night of this week. Robert A. Harris, vice president in pharge of manufacturing, who is head- *r>g the campaign at Fieldcrest, urged that employees give the equivalent of One day’s pay as their fair share in the Community Fund campaign. The contri- l^ution may be a pledge to be paid in installments by payroll deductions. The first deductions will be made from the paycheck for the week ending ^larch 9. Deductions may be spread over a 12-week period. First deductions aniong salaried employees will be from ^larch paychecks. Deductions will be niade for three months. Mr. Harris joined the Rev. Harry D. Wood, general chairman of the cam paign, in appealing for generous support of the Community Fund. Failure to reach the community-wide goal of $38,918.74 would mean that needy persons and families will suffer as needed health, welfare and recreational services would be absent or curtailed. Agencies participating in the Com munity Fund are Red Cross, Boy and Girl Scouts, Boys’ Club, Salvation Army, Rescue Squad, Y.M.C.A.s and Retarded Children. NOTICE Effective Monday, February 17, the Industrial Relations Department and the Standards Department are located in the new Fieldcrest office building in the Central Area. Persons having business at the Employment Office, Medical Department etc. should go to the new location. The telephone switchboard also has been moved to the new office. Changes in telephone numbers are listed in the new Fieldcrest directory which was distributed last week. Persons calling on “inside” telephone lines should consult the sheet “Sched ule of Telephone Number Changes” in the front of the new directory. Plaques Are Awarded Employees At Blanket And Karastan Mills Fieldcrest Mills has awarded beautiful bronze plaques to em ployees of the Blanket and Kara stan mills in recognition of their outstanding support of the Tri- City Hospital Building Fund cam paign. Presentations were made at the mills Monday afternoon, February 3. At the start of the hospital fund cam paign at Fieldcrest, President Harold W. Whitcomb announced that the Company would give a plaque to the mill with the largest contribution per employee. In addition, a suitable unit in the new hospital—representative of whatever the mill’s contributions will buy—would be named in honor of the employees of the mill making the largest contribution per employee. Contest Considered A Tie Results at the Blanket and Karastan mills were so close that the contest was considered a tie and plaques were awarded both mills. Ninety-four per cent of the employees at the Blanket Mill pledged a total of $36,992.62, an average contribution of $48.38 per employee. One hundred per cent of the Karastan employees pledged a total of $28,982.85, an average of $48.14 for each employee. President Whitcomb personally pre sented the plaques in ceremonies at the two mills. At the Blanket Mill where it was impractical to stop off the mill and get all of the employees together, the presentation was made before a del egation of employees representing all departments. J. H. Ripple, manager of the Blanket and Sheeting mills, accept ed the plaque on behalf of the Blanket Mill employees. Large Crowd At Ceremony At Karastan, a large majority of the employees attended the ceremony which was held at shift change time in the af ternoon. J. M. Norman, mill manager, spoke briefly and presented John G. Cunningham, superintendent, who ac cepted the plaque on behalf of the em ployees.
