Seven Receive 45 And 40-Year Awards
January is a month of import
ant service anniversaries for
seven Fieldcrest employees in
four different mills.
Paul p. Fleming, Bleachery, and
Fletcher W. Hopper and W. D. Giles,
both of the Blanket Mill, completed 45
years of continuous service with the
Company. Eunice Buckner, Bedspread
Finishing; Rora Lee Talbott, Bedspread;
Louella L. Carter and J. W. Hairfield,
both of the Blanket Mill, completed 40-
year records.
The Company honored the veteran
employees on their anniversary dates.
Each was presented with the Fieldcrest
diamond-and-gold service emblem in-
SCHOLARSHIPS
In response to a number of in
quiries concerning when to apply
for the two $2,000 scholarships
given annually by the Fieldcrest
Foundation, Dr. William McGehee,
secretary of the Scholarship Com
mittee, announces that the com
mittee will begin accepting appli
cations after March 1.
A subsequent announcement
will be made on the mill bulletin
boards and in The Mill Whistle
giving instructions on how to ap
ply, the eligibility rules, and other
necessary information. Dr. McGe
hee said.

Mr. Fleming, a native of Martinsville,
Va., first joined the Company at the
old Athena Knitting Mill in Leaksville.
After working there for a short while
as a packer, he was transferred to the
Bleachery as fo:*sman of the grey room.
He has been a supervisor for virtually
all of his 45 years with the Company
and has never been off of the payroll
for any reason during his long service.
Mr. Hopper has an unusual record in
that he has worked in the same mill and
department and in the same job classi
fication for his entire 45 years with the
Company. He began working as a doffer
in the Cotton Spinning Department at
the Blanket Mill in January, 1916, and
he continues to wcrk as a doffer in the
same room. He was born in Henry Coun
ty, Va., but moved to Draper when he
was a young boy.
Mr. Giles, also a native of Henry
County, Va., first was employed as a
spare hand in the old Jack Spinning
Department at the Blanket Mill in Jan
uary, 1916. He became a weaver at the
Elanket Mill in February, 1920, and
worked as a weaver for over 15 years.
He then was promoted to Icomfixer in
which clascification he continues
work.

Miss Buckner, born near Asheville,
was employed in January, 1921, as a
scalloper in the Bedspread Cutting and
