Whitcomb Addresses Morehead Assembly; Stresses Need For Education, Technical Training Education and technical training are becoming increasingly important as pre requisites for advanced jobs in industry which pay higher salaries and provide more of the so-called good things of life. President Harold W. Whitcomb told the students at Morehead High School at an assembly program Thursday morning. May 25. Mr. Whitcomb spoke to the entire stu dent body in the new auditorium pre liminary to presenting checks to Miss Glenda Overby and Gale Rhodes, mem bers of the 1961 graduating class who were awarded Fieldcrest Scholarships through the Fieldcrest Foundation. Darrell Steagall, an employee of the Leaksville Standards Department who was awarded the third scholarship given by the Foundation this school year, was presented his check by Mr. Whitcomb in the latter’s office following the as sembly program. In his talk at the school, Mr. Whit comb said business and industry are dif ferent and more complex than they were a generation ago and it is impossible to perform many of the jobs without the basic education acquired in high school. The better-paying positions and the greatest advancement as a general rule go to those who have furthered their education by going to college, Mr. Whitcomb said. He pointed out that the Fieldcrest organization employs over 200 college graduates from 60 different col leges and universities. He urged the students to apply them selves while in high school and to earn the right to go to college. He said the (Continued on Page Four) H. W.
