William N. Retiree Is Winner At Flower Show William N. Andrews, retired Fieldcrest salesman who lives in Decatur, 111., was the top winner in the horticulture di vision at the recent Illinois State Fair. He won a total of 50 ribbons, including 25 blue ones. In the rose event he won 25 ribbons, 10 of them blues. In other events he entered 50 specimens in dah lias, zinnias, marigolds, asters, tuberous begonias, and gloxinias. For these he won 25 ribbons, 15 of them blue ribbons. Since his retirement in 1951, Mr. An drews has engaged in flower gardening on an extensive scale. He has develop ed his garden until “Tulip Hill,” his home in Decatur, has become a show- place with thousands of flowers. Won Hundreds Of Ribbons He is a perennial top winner in flower shows at the State Fair, the Ma con County Fair and in the Stephen Decatur Rose Show. He has received hundreds of ribbons and prizes for his flowers and has written gardening col umns for the Decatur newspapers. At the Stephen Decatur Rose Show this summer he won 27 ribbons, includ ing eight blue ribbons. Then at the Decatur and Macon County Fair he won 37 ribbons, 16 of them blue ones, with dahlias, roses, tuberous begonia potted plants and annuals, zinnias, marigolds, petunias, asters, etc. Mr. Andrews three years ago talked the State Fair officials into having a Rose Day and this event has attracted the greatest interest from the public in the hortici^ture division. The rose show has grown xintil this year it had 1,500 blooms. Mr. Andrews is now cam paigning to have the American Rose Society conduct the rose show at the Illinois Fair as a further improvement. Well known to many at Fieldcrest, Mr. 6 Andrews keeps in touch with the Field crest organization through The Mill Whistle and by correspondence. He is always interested in the hobbies of other retirees, particularly those who share his love of flowers. A native of Decatur, he returned there to live after his retirement from a 42- year career with Marshall Field & Com pany and Fieldcrest Mills. From 1910 until his retirement, he was a curtain salesman covering the huge midwest territory, including Pittsburgh, Cleve land, Detroit, Louisville and other cen ters as well as several states in the northwestern United States. Buckner Children Susan Annette one year old, and Jeanne Marie, two, are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Buckner. Father is em ployed in the Bedspread Spinning Of fice. Buy . .. Sell .. . Greenville Bowling The Karastan Spinning Division has established a participation record by having some 60 employees bowling in a commercial league sponsored by the plant. This number of bowlers is unu sually high considering the total em ployment of the mill. The large crowd from the Karastan Spinning Division converged on the Hillcrest Bowling Lanes Tuesday night, September 11, to begin the 1962-63 league season. Trophies will be awarded at the end of the season to winning teams and to high individual scorers. Bill Newell, foreman of the Winding and Twisting Department, is president of the Men’s League and Mary Skinner is president of the Women’s League. Any other employees of the Karastan Spinning Division who are interested in participating in this pleasant and excit ing recreational program are invited to contact one of the above. Paternal grandmother, Gladys Smith, is employed in the Weave Room at the Sheeting Mill. ^ Maternal grandpar ents are Mr. and Mrs. Spottswood Tay lor, of Spencer, Va. Enters Mars Hill Jackie Alfred Mitchell, a 1962 grad uate of Morehead High School, entered Mars Hill College September 11. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph K. Mitchell of 403 East Delaware Avenue, Draper. His father is a comber and lap- per operator in the Carding Department at the Sheeting Mill. THE MILL WHISTLE
