Karastan Man Wins Trip To World’s Fair Kathleen Murphy, Of Sales Office, Is Wed Miss Kathleen Therese Murphy, daughter of Mrs. Joseph Edward Mur phy of Brooklyn, N. Y. and the late Mr. Murphy, was married September 15 to John Peter Toolan, son of Mrs. John Joseph Toolan, of the Bronx, and the late Mr. Toolan. The marriage was in the Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis Xavier in Brooklyn, New York. The Rev. Charles W. Gordon performed the cere mony and celebrated the nuptial mass. The bride is employed in the Distribu tor Sales Department of our Fieldcrest Sales Offices in New York. After a wed ding trip to Bermuda the couple is living in Manhattan. GERALD WATKINS: Wrote prize-winning: essay in contest at University. Gerald Watkins, of the Karastan De signing Department, has recently return ed from an expense-paid trip to the World’s Fair in Seattle, Wash. He won the trip in an essay contest at the Uni versity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Gerald, while a junior at the Uni versity last spring, entered the essay contest sponsored by the English and Political Science Departments. At the time he wrote the essay he did not know that the trip was being offered. This summer he was notified that he had won the trip. His essay was entitled “Federal Aid To Highways in 1956” and presented a study of pressure groups and their ef fect on legislation. Gerald is a native of Reidsville and graduated from Reidsville High School where he was president of the student body, master counselor of the Order of DeMolay and a leader in other student activities. He entered the University in the fall of 1959. He has completed his first three years and plans to complete his final studies by correspondence and con tinue to work at Karastan. When he was employed at the Karas tan Service Center last July he intended Housekeeping Award The Karastan Weave Room’s award for the best housekeeping during the month of September was won by the weavers on Loom 59, Edgrar Clark, James Roberts and Hebert Hundley. To stimulate cleanliness and orderli ness in the weave room, the mill awards a certificate each month on the loom which has the highest total points in four housekeeping inspections made by the supervisors. The certificate remains on the loom during the succeeding month, calling at tention to the outstanding housekeeping job done by the weavers. to work only during the summer. He de cided, however, that it would be more profitable to him to continue working and to study at night. He has been working in the Karastan Designing De partment since September 4 as a de signer trainee. Gold Dust , which won ribbons in several horse shows this summer. Dennis Walker, of the Towel Mill Spinning Department, second shift, is known as a man who loves horses particularly one horse. He is one of several horse owners at the Towel Mill who are active in the Patrick-Henry Saddle Club and owns a golden yellow palomino called “Gold Dust.” Dennis is justifiably proud of the Cali fornia-raised cowpony which has won 15 ribbons in various horse shows this summer including a blue ribbon and a gold cup for the running cloverleaf barrel race. “Gold Dust” also has been entered in horse races at Pine Park, Danville, Va. where he won first place on two occasions. Knowing Dennis’ affection for “Gold Dust”, friends at the Towel Mill fre quently pretend to try to buy the palo mino from him. Dennis always has the same answer: “‘Gold Dust’ is not for sale at any price.” THE MILL whistle
