1 H. F. Cumbo (center), early weaver at Bedspread Mill, is shown with the Rev. J. K. McConnell, industrial chaplain, and M. S. Frazier, long-service employee. Former Weaver Revisits Bedspread An early employee of the Bedspread Mill was impressed and amazed at the progress since he worked there many years ago. Making a “sentimental jour ney” to the mill to see the changes that have taken place and to see old friends was Harvey F. Cumbo, a weaver at the Bedspread Mill starting in 1919. He left in 1935 and joined the P. H. Wins Scholarship Hanes Knitting Co. in Winston-Salem. Since his recent retirement there he said he “had a yearning” to see his old work place and friends at the Bedspread Mill. Arrangements for such a visit were made by the Rev. J. K. McConnell, in dustrial chaplain, who conducted Mr. Cumbo on a tour of the mill. Mr. Cumbo talked with W. G. Hunnings, mill super intendent, and some of the supervisors. In the weave room he was greeted by a few employes who knew him although most of his former co-workers are now retired. Mr. Cumbo is well remembered in Leaksville, where he was a charter member of the Moravian Church and was teacher of the men’s Bible class in the Sunday School. He is a brother-in- law of Mrs. Bertha Griffin who recently retired from the Bedspread Mill with 46 years of continuous service. Can’t Get Through Christopher F. Serocke, a graduate of St. Agnes Cathedral School in Rock ville Centre, N. Y., was awarded the Archbishop Molloy Memorial Scholar ship to St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Mass. The scholarship, a full tuition, four- year grant, was awarded on the basis of a competitive test taken by almost 300 boys from the New York City area. Only three such scholarships were awarded. Christopher ranked second in his graduating class of 102 children at St. Agnes. He is the son of A. F. Serocke, Product Manager of the Bedspread De partment in New York. A Communist Party organizer wrote a despairing note to his Kremlin bosses: “It is becoming increasingly difficult to reach downtrodden American masses. “In the spring, they are forever polishing their shiny new cars. “In the summer they take vacations, In the fall they flock to baseball and football games. “And in the winter, I can’t get them to leave their warm cozy homes and TV sets to hear my lectures. “How can I make these slaves of Capitalism see how oppressed they are?” Buy . . .
