Teachers Tour Towel Mill On B-E Day Groups of teachers and school admin - istrators from Martinsville and Henry County Schools toured the Towel Mill at Fieldale, Va. recently as part of the annual observance of Business-Educa tion Day, a program designed to ac quaint the teachers with the business and industrial community. The teachers assembled in the con ference room for a briefing by D. E. Simcns, superintendent manufacturing, and then were divided into smaller groups and given tours of the mill. The visitors had lunch with company and Towel Mill officials in the picnic area at the Fieldale Ball Park. W. O. Stone, Jr., assistant manager of the Towel Mill, was master of ceremonies and G. L. Caraway, Jr., superintendent of shipping, warehousing and customer service, gave the invocation. H. H. Newton, director of industrial relations, described the operations of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc. at its various lo cations. He told of the tremendous ad vancement in the textile industry with respect to equipment, plants and bene fits and cited the five general wage increases that have been made in the past four years. Dr. L. H. Hance, division vice presi dent for research and engineering, dis cussed “Clues to Rapid Growth” in tell ing the story of Fieldcrest Mills’ spec tacular success. He pointed to the tre mendous reinvestment that the company has mads to improve the mills, particu larly for buildings and improvement of working conditions. D. A. Purcell, general manager- towel manufacturing, traced the history of Fieldale and the Towel Mill. He praised the “fine, cooperative spirit oJ the people” and reviewed improvemem made at the Towel Mill, which he sai is now one of the best equipped toW^ mills in the world. Dr. William McCehee, director of pet sonnel research and training, describe the company’s training programs. R said the textile industry is a growth UJ' dustry and offers as great an oppot tunity as can be found in Amerie' today. During the program the teachers wej introduced, and B. K. Rives, count; school superintendent, and Robert Taj lor, a member of^ the county scho^ board, were recognized. , Eddie Levi, of Drewry Mason Hie School, responded for the teachers an, expressed appreciation for Fieldcres friendliness and cooperation.
