Canteens Are Improved And Modernized Something new has been added at the Blanket Finishing Mill, Eden. It’s the new canteen for the Beck Dye Depart ment. The canteen was recently en larged and relocated in an enclosed, air conditioned area. The room was paneled and a tile floor installed. The ceiling was lowered and new lighting put in. A battery of the latest-type vending machines was in stalled along with a dollar bill changer, an oven and a service bar and stools. Also enlarged and remodeled was the canteen at the Non-Woven Blanket Mill. The canteen room there also is in an air conditioned, enclosed space with paneling, modern lighting, and a tile floor. All of the existing equipment was repainted and modernized and an oven and a service bar were added. The picture at left shows a part of the new canteen in the Beck Dye Depart ment. Shown below is the modernized canteen at the Non-Woven Blanket Mill. Employees in the lower picture are Alexander Wilson, at left, and Harold Scales. Hi Rathbum began his career with the Company as a temporary employee in Marshall Field & Company’s Retail Advertising Department in the fall of 1928 while Mr. Rathburn was attending art school in Chicago. In February, 1929, he became a full-time member of the Art Department. In June, 1936, he was given the re sponsibility of the Production Depart ment, overseeing the purchasing of all printing supplies and the general pro duction of all advertising. He spent 25 months in the Army during World War II. Mr. Rathburn was transferred to New York in March, 1946, as assistant to the sales promotion manager of Marshall Field & Company’s Manufacturing Di vision. In 1948, he was named advertis ing manager and continues to serve in that capacity. Mr. Thompson, whose service record was reported in the last issue of The Mill Whistle but whose picture was not available at the time, is a native of Franklin County, Va. He completed 40 years of continuous service with the Company January 28. He has worked as a doffer at the old Lily Mill, Nan tucket, Rhode Island, Blanket and Bed spread Mills. He became a shuttle filler at the Rayon Mill in 1940 and later worked as a weaver and as a warp hanger. He was employed in the Karastan Mill in 1957 and was a floor worker until he became a weaver in 1962. He continues to work in the weaver classification. ONd AY, FEBRUARY 17, 1969
