We’re Worth Bilii By any yardstick, an employee of the U. S. textile industry plays a valuable role in maintaining the well-being of his country. Nearly one million men and women in 42 states make the industry’s 7,000 plants the most efficient in the world. And the wages these employees earn are helping to maintain the liveli hood of hundreds of tho'usands more Americans. The following figures based on federal govern mental data should give you a good idea of what a textile employee is worth to the economy of his na tion and his state. This year U. S. textile employees will spend ap proximately: $1.18 billion for food and kindred products, $1.42 billion for housing, $457.8 million for clothing and upkeep, $594.7 million for transportation, $259.6 million for medical care, $245.4 million for recreation, $117.9 million for personal care, $396.5 million for local, state and federal taxes. Nearly 270,000 North Carolinians are employed in the state’s 1,200 textile plants. Out of their more than $1.2 billion annual payroll they spend: $313.4 million for food and kindred products, $375.1 million for housing, $123.6 million for clothing and upkeep, $158 million for transportation, $69 million for medical care, $65.2 million for recreation, $31.3 million for personal care, $105.3 million for local, state and federal taxes.
