Winter Driving Requires Caution the millwhis If you’ve been having trouble driving this winter, you might be interested in these driving tips passed along by the Fieldcrest Safety Department; 1. Use a rag to wipe your soles when you slide into the driver’s seat during snowy weather. A slippery foot can skid off the brake. 2. To aid traction, carry a supply of sand, ashes, or rock salt in case you get stuck; an old burlap bag or blanket also will do. 3. Carrying a shovel in your car is a good idea. But over-exertion isn’t. If you have to shovel your car out of a drift, take it easy. 4. Add a good fuel additive to your gas tank from time to time to avoid fuel line freeze-up. 5. Keep tires inflated at normal pressure; letting some air out doesn’t improve traction as some people believe. 6. When the road is slippery, maintain a substantial distance be tween your car and the vehicle in front of you. What Causes Inflation? Nearly everybody knows that inflation means rising prices. What most people don’t know is what causes inflation or what can be done about it. The answer to what causes inflation is government. If government allows our stock of money to increase faster than we can increase production, then we get generally rising prices. Clearly, if people have too much money for our supply of goods and services at a particular time, people will bid up prices in the market. Also, workers will push for bigger raises. And since labor costs amount to about 80% of total costs, costs all along the line will rise. During the 1960s, the Federal Government spent $57 billion more than it took in. It had to borrow the rest, and its borrowing led to gov ernment pushing up the stock of money too fast. It’s about that simple, when you boil it down. Robert C.
