If every taxpayer in the country had
to pay his income taxes just once a
year in cash, the roar of rage and pain
could probably be heard in outer space.
The system of withholding taxes from
wages earned lulls us into a state of
apathy and often we aren’t aware of
our tax bite. Since we don’t get hold
of the money in the first place, its easy
not to realize the enormity of the bur
den.
Back in the days before the “with
holding” scheme was cooked up, tax
payers did have to come up with the
cash each spring. And this served to
make them aware of the high cost
of government—even though it was
small compared to today.
Every citizen should know that spend
ing by all governments in the United
States (federal, state and local combin
ed) rose by 9.1 percent to an all-time
high of $308 billion during the 1968-
1969 fiscal year.
And the staggering size of this bur
den should constantly remind us to
demand and work for economy in gov
ernment.
