18 Additional Grants-ln-Aid Announced
A total of 39 children of Fieldcrest
employees have been awarded grants-
in-aid by the Fieldcrest Foundation
since the program was initiated in May
of 1972.
The individual grants-in-aid range
upwards to $1,000 per year. To date,
the Fieldcrest Foundation has award
ed a total of $25,300 in the grants-in-
aid program.
The grant program, which is sep
arate from the Fieldcrest Scholarship
program, is based on need as well as
scholastic ability and recognizes that an
individual may more profitably attend
technical Institutes or take trade cours
es rather than attend a four-year col
lege. It is designed to aid the children
of employees who wish to attend tech
nical schools, do college work or par
ticipate in other forms of education be
yond high school.
The 18 most recent recipients of Field
crest grants are Olin Lynn Blackwell,
James William Booth, Jr., Clarence
Wayne Boyd, Sara Elizabeth Carter, Va
nessa Gale Chilton, Keith Junius Cor-
riher, Martha Farabee, Brenda Kay
Green, Denise Darcel Hampton, Charles
Irving Hicks, Barbara Ray Lassiter,
Reginald Manns, Deborah Ann Martin,
Doris Jean Rea, Karen Kay Solesbee,
Priscilla Dean Spencer, Victoria Lynn
Trantham and Larry Graham Williams.
Olin Lynn (Skipper) Blackwell is a
1970 graduate of Morehead High School.
He plans to study for the Bachelor of
Science degree at Cincinnati Bible Sem
inary for a career in evangelism. His
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ed
ward Blackwell of Eden. Mr. Blackwell
is a mail clerk at the General Offices
in Eden.
James William Booth, Jr. is a 1970
graduate of Morehead High School. He
is attending the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro majoring in
English and plans to teach after grad
uation. Hs is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
James W. Booth, Sr., of Eden. Mr. Booth
is a loom fixer at the Blanket Greige

Alexander is Named Highway Commissioner
Jake F. Alexander, purchasing agent
at the North Carolina Finishing Com
pany division at Salisbury, has been
appointed State Highway Commission
er for Rowan, Cabarrus and Union
Counties.
Mr. Alexander was sworn in by Gov.
Jim Holhouser on January 11, along
with other members of the State High
way Commission.
Immediately following the election of
New Shift Foreman
Glenn X. Wilson has been named shift
foreman in the Weave Room at the
Karastan Rug Mill, effective January 8.
Mr. Wilson is presently going through
a training program in the Weave Room.
For the past four years, he has been
a supervisor in the Weaving Depart
ment at Cone Mills.
JAKE F. ALEXANDER
Mr. Holhouser on November 7, various
organizations and individuals endorsed
Mr. Alexander for the post of State
Highway Commissioner. He also re
ceived the endorsement of the Rowan
County Republican executive commit
tee and the directors of the Salisbury-
Rowan Chamber of Commerce.
The newly appointed highway com
missioner has been active in many fac
ets of community and political life
since moving to Salisbury with the
North Carolina Finishing Co. in 1948.
Working originally In the Cost De
partment, Mr. Alexander was made gen
eral foreman in the Put-Up Department
in 1954. In 1955, he was made purchas
ing agent, his present position.
Mr. Alexander and his wife, Doris,
are the parents of four children and
reside at 8 Woodland Road in Salisbury.
