Fieldcrest Receives
SavEnergy Citation
Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., has
received a U.S. Department of
Commerce SavEnergy Citation
for its leadership in nation-wide
energy conservation.
, The company was notified in a
letter from Frederick B. Dent,
Secretary of Commerce, to
William C. Battle, president of
Fieldcrest Mills, Inc.
The citation was sent to Mr.
Battle along with a letter from
Frederick C. Farmer, acting
director of the U.S. Department
of Commerce, Domestic and
International Business
Administration, district office,
in Greensboro.

Larger Switchboard
Now Operational
A new, enlarged switchboard
at the General Offices became
o^rational on Monday, March
The new switchboard, which
features three positions rather
than the previous two positions.
Will enable the three operators to
handle more calls at one time.
The main reason for the
installation of the new board is
Fieldcrest’s conversion to an
out-WATS system for placing
long distance calls. The first
phase of the conversion is
expected to take place on April 2.
With the WATS system, long
distance calls may be made

In part, Mr. Farmer’s letter
stated, “. . . You can be certain
that your efforts and those of the
other thousands of firms that
have joined you in this effort are
making a significant
contribution to the handling of
this problem.
“Your voluntary participation
in this program is indicative of
the type of commitment
required of American industry
not only to relieve the energy
shortage; but also to contribute
to the nation’s general well
being by preventing plant shut
downs, keeping people at work.

Newest 50-Year Employee
Honored By Management
John W. (Bill) Page,
Fieldcrest’s newest 50-year
employee, was honored by the
management of the company at
a luncheon at the Meadow
Greens Country club Tuesday,
March 19.
Mr. Page was presented with
the Fieldcrest diamond-and-gold
50-year service pin, a gift and
other remembrances. The
presentations were made by
Arthur L. Jackson, senior vice
president-manufacturing.
Haven H. Newton, vice presi
dent-industrial relations,
presided and read a telegram
from William C. Battle, presi
dent of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., in
which Mr. Battle expressed his
regrets at having to be out of
town and unable to attend the
meeting.
Mr. Battle extended his good
wishes to Mr. Page and the other
members of the 50-Year Club
and expressed appreciation for
their contribution to the success
of the company.
Various company officials
made brief remarks recalling
their association with Mr. Page.
Among those speaking were Mr.
Jackson, Mr. Newton, Harold W.
Whitcomb, retired board
chairman of Fieldcrest Mills,
Inc., and now a director of the
company; Robert A. Harris,
executive vice president; and W.
Giles Hunnings, division vice
president-bed fashions manu
facturing.
In his response, Mr. Page said
he has enjoyed his 50 years at
Fieldcrest and praised “the nice
people I have worked with
here.” He has continuous
service since March 17, 1924. He
has been employed in the Weave
Room at the Draper Sheeting
Mill for virtually the entire 50
years since that time. He has
been a loom fixer for 32 years
and previously was a weaver for
