Fieldcrest Scholars — Where Are They Now?

Where are they now?
This is what The Mill Whistle
wanted to know about past
winners of Fieldcrest Scho
larships. Questionnaires were
sent out to as many past winners
as could be located. From the
material returned, it was
revealed that many of the
Fieldcrest Scholars went on to
earn post graduate degrees and
most have achieved success in
their chosen fields.
W. Gale Rhodes, a 1961
Fieldcrest Scholarship
recipient, graduated from N.C.
State University in 1965 with a
B.S. degree in applied
mathematics. While at State he
was elected to Phi Kappa Phi
National Scholastic Honorary
Society, Pi Mu Epsilon National
Mathematics Honorary Society,
and the Society of the Sigma Xi,
an honorary society for the
advancement of science.
He went on the earn a PhD
degree in chemistry from the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill in 1971. He recently
received a two-year Cottrell
College Science grant from
research in the evolution of pro
teins at Maryville College and
served as advisor to a student
group which did cancer research
on a National Science
Foundation grant.
At present he is chairman of
the chemistry department at
Maryville College, Maryville,
Tenn. He is the son of Carl D.
Rhodes and the late Eugenia C.
Rhodes. His father retired from
the Domestics Designing
Department in October of this
year.
Mary Jane Lawless Gregory
received a Fieldcrest
Scholarship in 1961 and
graduated from Lynchburg
College in 1966 with a B.A.
degree in elementary education.
She v^s listed in Who’s Who in
American Colleges and
Universities. At present she is
office manager of Lynchburg
Secretarial Service in
Lynchburg, Va.
Darrell C. Steagall, a 1961
scholarship recipient, graduated
from North Carolina State
1' University in 1966 with a B.S.
degree. He graduated with
If honors and was the recipient of
the North Carolina Textile
Manufacturers Outstanding
i Textile Senior Award, the Delta
ff Kappa Phi Outstanding Textile
award and the Textile
. Journalism Award.

At present he is vice president
of sales and secretary of
Carlton, Inc., a diversified
textile company which produces
yarn, double and singleknit
fabric, nonwoven fabrics and
industrial sewing thread. He is a
member of the board of
directors of Carlton, Inc. and
president of Carlton Knits
Division of Carlton, Inc. He is
also a member of the board of
directors of Delta Thread Com
pany, Mill Fabrics, Inc. and the
American Yarn Spinners
Association. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. James J. Steagall. His
father is a retired employee of
the Bedspread Mill Weaving
Department.
Linda l.orraine Wilkinson
received a Fieldcrest Scho
larship in 1960. She last attend
ed Virginia Commonwealth
University and at present is art
director for Art Studio, Inc. in

Greensboro. She is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Dweight
Wilkinson. Her father is
superintendent of plant services
at the Fieldale Towel Mill.
Darlene Sue Scott Sampson, a
1963 Fieldcrest Scholarship
winner, graduated from
Westhampton College,
University of Richmond, in 1967
with a B.A. degree in Spanish.
She also received the M.A.
degree in Spanish from New
York University in 1969.
At present, she is an assistant
editor with the Unified Science
and Mathematics for
Elementary Schools Education
Development Center in Newton,
Mass. As assistant editor, she
helps write and edit new
curriculum materials in science
and math for grades one through
eight. Her mother, Hallie Scott,
is a retired spinner at the
F'ieldale Towel Mill.

Robert Wade Myrick received
a Fieldcrest Scholarship in 1964.
He received a B.A. degree from
the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill in 1968 and
graduated from the UNC School
of Law in 1971. He is now a
partner in the law firm of
Clayton, Myrick, McCain and
Oettinger in Durham. His
mother, Juanita S. McElroy, is a
former employee of the Auto
matic Blanket Plant Office.
Donald F. Rhodes, a 1964
scholarship winner, graduated
from the North Carolina State
University School of Textiles in
1968 with a B.S. degree in textile
technology. He is now a process
devel'>pment engineer with
Huyck-Formex, a division of
Huyck Corporation. He is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Sam B. Rhodes,
Jr. His father is supervisor of the
chemical laboratory and colorist

Richard Wayne Hall, also a
1964 scholarship winner,
graduated from Western Caro
lina University magna cum
laude in 1968 with an associate in
arts degree and a B.S. degree.
He was listed in Who’s Who in
American Colleges and Univer
sities. He also holds a master of
arts degree. At present he is
assistant terminal manager of
Associated Transport in
Danville, Va. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Curtis Hall. His
mother. Hazel, is a retired
employee of the Blanket Greige
Mill Weaving Department.
Barry Trevis Byrd, a 1965
scholarship winner, graduated
from North Carolina State
University in 1969 with a B.S.
degree in textile chemistry. He
was the recipient of the Textile
