Fieldcrest Scholars — Where Are They Now? (Editor’s Note: This is the second in a series of three articles on past winners of Fieldcrest Scholarships. Questionnaires were sent out to as many past recipients as could be located, and it was revealed from the material returned that many of the Fieldcrest Scholars went on to earn post graduate degrees and that most have achieved success in their chosen fields.) Carolyn Phillips Canzonier, a 1967 Fieldcrest Scholarship recipient, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971 with a B.A. degree in mathematics. At present she is civilian computer specialist with the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson, S.C. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence R. Phillips. Her mother, Ramona, is a former employee of the Automatic Blanket Plant Information Systems Department. Sarah Dunivant Crews, also a 1967 scholarship recipient, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a B.S. degree in nursing. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Oliver Dunivant. Her father is a retired employee of the Finishing Department at the Karastan Rug Mill. Her mother, Frances, is employed in the Winding Department at the Karastan Rug Mill. Sherry Lynn Wood, who received a Fieldcrest Scho larship in 1968, graduated summa cum laude from West Virginia University with a B.S. degree in journalism (advertis ing) with hours equivalent to a major in psychology. She was a member of Kappa Tau Alpha, Psu Chi and Theta Sigma Phi national honor societies and sororities. She was employed after graduation by the Florida Public Relations Association in Hollywood, Fla., and was associate editor of Communique Magazine and editor of The National Guide To Florida. She also won a Recognition of Achievement Award for photography. At present she is free-lancing, and is also teaching in the Hollywood Private School for delinquent teenage boys and girls (high school level). In addition, she is working toward a master’s degree in psychology at Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dexter Wood. Her father is retired from the Sewing Department at the Fieldale Towel Mill. A. Michael Hall, a 1968 scholarship recipient, graduated cum laude from Bridgewater College in 1972 with a B.A. degree in psychology and re ligion, and magna cum laude from Candler School of Theology, Emory University, with a master of divinity degree. At present he is a caseworker, protective services, investigating incidents of child abuse and neglect with the Clayton County Department of Family and Children’s services. He lives in Atlanta, Ga. Hall and Doris Hall, both of whom are employed at the Fieldale Towel Mill. Nancy Thomas McCullough, another 1968 recipient, graduated from Guilford College in 1972 with a B.A. degree in sociology. At present, she is teaching adult basic education at Isothermal Community College and Cleveland County Technical Institute. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Thomas. Her father is an industrial engineer at the Alexander Sheeting Mill. Carole Anne Meeks Archer, who received a Fieldcrest Scholarship in 1969, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a B.S. degree in mathematics. She is now a computer programmer with J. P. Stevens in Charlotte, She is a daughter of Mrs. Marshall 0. Meeks and the late Mr. Meeks. Her father was em ployed in the Boiler Room at the Blanket Finishing Mill. James William Bryant, who also received a scholarship in 1969, graduated cum laude from Appalachian State University with a B.A. degree in 1973. He was a member of Alpha Chi honor society. At present he is teaching junior high school in the Pender County school system and living in Wil mington, N.C. He teaches social studies, art, music, health and physical education. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Bryant. His RICHARD H. BRINKLEY, JR. 1969 father is employed at the Karastan Service Center. His mother, Octavia, works in the Sewing Department at the Sheet Finishing Mill. Richard H. Brinkley, Jr., 1969, graduated from N.C. State University in 1973 with a B.S. degree in textile technology. He is now a technical service representative with Eastman Chemical Products, Inc., and lives in Kingsport, Tenn. His parents are Mr. and^Mrs. Richard Brinkley. His father is a maintenance foreman at North Carolina Finishing. Vicki Brackett Bolin, 1969, graduated from Winthrop College in 1973 with a B.A. degree. She is now teaching fifth grade at Sharon Elementary School at Sharon, S.C. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Beck. Her father is employed in the Finishing Department at North Carolina Finishing and her mother, Betty, is employed in the Accounting Department at NCF. Sandra Green Styron, 1969, graduated from East Carolina University in 1963 with a B.S. degree in early childhood education. She is presently working toward an M.A. degree in education and is a reading resources teacher in grades two through four in the Pitt County Schools. She lives in Greenville and is the daughter of Elsie Eason Barnes and the late J. C. Green. Her mother is a former employee of the Control Department at the Automatic Blanket Plant, Smithfield. VICKI BOLIN 1969 SANDRA STYRON 1969 NORMA GAIL SHIVELY 1970 Naomi Carter Tagg, 1969, received a B.S. degree in nursing from Radford College in 1973. She is now a staff nurse at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, and lives in Fairborn, Ohio. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. J. Eldrin Carter. Her father is employed in the Packing Department at the Fieldale Towel Mill. Norma Gail Shively, 1970, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro magna cum laude in 1974 with a B.A. degree in English educa tion. She was named to Phi Beta Kappa. She is now teaching English at Laurel Park High School in Henry County, Va. and living in Eden. She is the daughter of Norman E. Shively and the late Mrs. Shively. Susan Gambill Nicholas, 1967, graduated from North Carolina State University in 1971 with a B.S. degree in applied mathe matics. She was named to Phi Beta Kappa and was secretary- treasurer of Pi Mu Epsilon honorary mathematics society. She is now a computer programmer at the Research Triangle Institute, Research Triangle Park, and is living in Durham. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daily P. Gambill.
