50 Years Of Service -
And He’d Do It All Again
Bunyan Lee Thompson will
soon be enjoying fishing, his
annual gardening and some
plain “piddling around.” But
there will be a difference this
year. He retired effective
February 1 with over 50 years of
continuous service with
Fieldcrest.
A loom fixer instructor at the
Bedspread Mill at retirement,
Mr. Thompson came to work at
Fieldcrest in 1925 as a doffer at
the old Nantucket Mill. During
his 50 years with the company,
he worked at the old Lily Mill
(later called the Silk Mill, then
the Rayon Mill and Synthetic
Fabrics Mill). He became a

David L. LaPrade has been
promoted from section foreman
in the Cotton System Spinning
Department at the Blanket
Greige Mill to general foreman
of the Flocked Blankets Depart
ment at the Non-Woven Mill.
He was section foreman at the
Blanket Greige Mill from 1972
until his latest appointment. He

company in March, 1969.
loom fixer at the Synthetic
Fabrics Mill in 1952, and when
that mill closed in 1956, he went
to the Bedspread Mill as a loom
fixer.
Born in Franklin County, Va.,
Mr. Thompson was one of 10
children. His family moved to
Eden when he was 10 years old.
At one time, his father and all 10
children worked for Fieldcrest.
One brother, Kermit, is still an
active employee working in the
Spinning Department at the
Bedspread Mill. Two brothers,
Charlie and Oscar, and three
sisters, Irva Hopkins, Celicia
Reynolds and Emma Richard
son, are retired Fieldcrest em
ployees,
Mr. Thompson is married to
the former Frances Washburn, a
native of Eden and a long-
service employee of the
Karastan Winding Department.
They have one son, Harold, an
engineer at the DuPont Plant in
Martinsville, Va., and two
grandchildren.
An active member of the
North Spray Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ), Mr.
Thompson serves as an elder,
and a Sunday School teacher.
“If I had it to do over again, I
would still come to work for
Fieldcrest,” Mr. Thompson
said. “I just don’t think you can
beat Fieldcrest. It’s a good com
pany.”
He says that he’s just going to
“piddle around” now that he’s
retired, but will do some fishing
and some gardening.
A sign in Colorado Springs
which makes people think as
they approach railway crossings
is this message: The Average
Time It Takes a Train to Pass
This Crossing Is Fourteen
Seconds — Whether Your Car Is
On It or Not.”
Her Slogan Was A Winner
Leila Jones was the most
recent winner in the safety
slogan contest at the Laurelcrest
Yarn Mill. Her slogan was “A,
Safety Pin Has its Points.”
The contest winner, a quality
control production clerk, is
shown above as she was
presented her gift selection, a
tool box, by Mike Strother,
Quality Control Lab supervisor.
